Chapter 35
I didn’t have time to turn around before an electric shock drove through me from behind. I shook with the force of it, my head rolling back as the electricity took control over my body.
After what seemed like an eternity, but must have been a few moments at most, the electric current was cut off and I fell to the floor in a heap.
My breath was raspy as oxygen tried to travel around my dry lungs. Small spasms still clung at my arms and legs, and for some reason the orders that my brain sent to my limbs never reached them. I might as well have been dead if it weren’t for my fluttering heart.
When the electricity had definitively left my body, I attempted to get up. Lifting a ton of stone might have been easier. My arms shook as I lifted myself off the ground, which for some reason appeared black. The ground shook and rolled in waves as I tried to steady myself, but I eventually managed to get on all fours. I looked slowly to the right. Jasmine and Zed were a couple of meters away, but they didn’t get any nearer. Their faces were hazy, too, so I couldn’t concentrate on them.
I looked to the right. Just as I had thought, Blade stood a few paces away, looking down at me coldly.
The poison was really kicking in now. The world spun and nothing seemed to matter anymore, but I willed myself to move. Something kept nagging at me to get up and fight Blade.
Eventually I managed to stand up. I was still unsteady but the earth had stopped rolling and I could concentrate on smaller details. I looked to Jasmine and Zed again. This time I saw their faces properly – Jasmine's face was streaked with tears and Zed had him mouth set in a grim line, but they were both looking my way.
It took me a while to realize why they didn’t get any nearer. I heard the loud crackle of electricity, and looked up.
I froze when I saw the massive lightning bolt that hung straight overhead. It reached from the sky to just a few meters above us, but for some reason it never reached the ground. It was just suspended in the air. There seemed to be veins of purple electricity coming from its tip and surrounding me, occasionally sending small sparks down. As I followed its shape I saw that Blade had placed it like a dome. A dome of electricity with me and him inside it.
Now if that wasn’t genius I didn’t know what was.
I tried to control my breathing as I realized that I was completely trapped. There was no getting away this time. If I got anywhere near the edge or the lightning bolt I would be fried alive, and even if I somehow managed to escape the dome he could easily kill me off with the lightning. There was no way out.
“How do you like it?” Blade asked with a smirk, gesturing upwards toward the suspended lightning.
“It’s … well, it's creative. Just make sure it doesn't come down and electrocute the wrong person,” I answered.
His smirk vanished. Instead of answering he made a flicker of electricity jump from behind him towards me. I saw it coming and quickly stepped to the right, leaning back and dodging the attack. He sent bolt after bolt but I always saw them coming and sped out of the way before they hit me.
I only saw through his plan after a good five minutes of running and dodging - he was trying to tire me, and it was working. Just that running made my legs heavier and my head spin. I stopped instantly as I realized what he was trying to do. When he sent the next attack I used my Wind-bending Talents to wave it off into another direction, making it hit the edge of the dome.
