Chapter 28
We all froze. My eyes darted left and right, but every image my brain received doubled my heartbeat.
My sword slowly came down from where it was poised mid-air.
Every man I saw had his face hidden behind the shadow of their black hoods. They were wearing full-sized black cloaks, with black leather boots and strange tight black trousers underneath. The material wasn't thin, like leggings, but thicker and more like a sort of padding on their skin. The top half of their body was made out of the same material.
"Not so confident now, are you?" Blade smirked.
Suzanne! Your Talents! Zed hissed. Kill them!
I felt like giving myself a slap for having been so stupid. How could I have forgotten my Talents? I thought.
I tried to concentrate in this mess. I reached out for the Sun, and immediately saw a problem. It was dark.
Zed! I moaned. There's no Sun!
There's always some Sun, idiot, he replied. I saw him clench his teeth, looking around fugitively. Now hurry up!
I reached out again, panicking. This time I went up. I tried to gather as much as I could in the little time I had.
"Got a plan B?" Blade asked. He was obviously enjoying us being trapped like this.
"I was hoping to stick to plan A," I muttered. He raised an eyebrow.
My heart leapt as I knew I had enough energy to ... to do what, exactly? To kill them? Burn them? What exactly would I do?
Seeing me hesitate, Zed urged me on. Come on, Suz, he said. We don't have much time.
Blade took my hesitation differently. "Surrender and live," he concluded triumphantly. "Fight and die."
"Yeah, whatever," I said, still unsure of what to do. "You know you can't kill me."
He snarled, placing both his swords back into their scabbards and pulling out a gleaming object from the inside of him black cloak.
A knife. It wasn't normal, though; I could see that it was Seraynian as soon as I got a proper look at it. The blade was wide, at least six inches wide, and curved. Just large enough to slide through a neck, I thought.
I finally realised that I was running out of time.
Time slowed down as I made my decision.
With a battle-like cry I send a wave of heat outwards in a full circle, yelling at Jasmine and Zed to duck.
I directed the intense heat straight towards the men's temples, to finish them off without too much pain. They buckled and fell to the floor in one movement.
A few of the smarter ones had ducked before the heat reached them. They stood up now, stunned, and with a sinking feeling I realise that Blade was one of them. There was a short silence while our eyes met. His message was clear: no more messing around.
Suddenly all the men were in motion. Silver blades appeared from scabbards on their backs, and blow upon blow started to rain down on me. I brought my sword up as I felt the impact of half a dozen fully-trained men's swords on my mine. I staggered under the sheer force of it, but held my ground. Blade was watching, assessing. Trying to find weaknesses.
