Chapter 27

I spun around.

"Who's that?" Will asked, his eyes darting towards the direction of the front door.

"Jasmine and Zed," I told them. "I have to go." The doorbell went off again, this time more urgently.

"Are they going to kill you?" he whispered.

I laughed. "No, they just need to take me back home, where I'm safe."

He looked confused. "Isn't this is your home?" he asked. I didn't answer, already leaving the kitchen. There were two shadows outside the front door.

I opened the door.

Yep, it was them.

If looks could kill, I'd be dust and bones in my grave. Jasmine looked at me expressionlessly. She grabbed by arm and yanked me outside.

"Hey, wait a minute!" I protested. "Jasmine, I know I'm stupid and stupid and even stupider, but could you at least let me say bye quickly?"

She turned to look at me. "We're being followed. Get out of here."

My heart froze. I hadn't anticipated that, either. Didn't Jasmine's magic work outside her mansion?

I went back to the kitchen quickly. "Listen, Mum," I said urgently as Jasmine appeared at the doorway. "We're being followed. Call the police if you see them."

"See who?" she asked, looking at Bumba and Will.

"You'll know when you see them," I replied. "Have to go. Sorry for putting you all in danger. Love you." I planted a light kiss on her cheek and ran out of the house.

"This way," said Zed. He led straight towards Raven's Stone Square.

Why aren't we running? I asked Jasmine as we walked briskly.

If we make any sudden movement they'll attack, she replied simply.

"Where are we going?" I asked, slowing down. "Why are we going to the Square?"

"Back alleys," she replied. "We'll try and loose them there."

I nodded. The back alleys were a cobwebs of dark and nearly unused streets. They were nearly always plunged in darkness because they were directly behind a bunch of really high buildings that had never been completely built. A sudden urge to look back tempted me to give the empty road a quick glance. I looked behind my shoulders and caught a tiny, almost undetectable black movement on the roofs. Adrenaline exploded through my body and I picked my speed up again.

"Go ahead," she said. "Use you speed Talents and get there as quick as possible."

"On my own?" I asked, suddenly feeling vulnerable.

"We need to lose them. I'll join you as soon as I can."

I nodded, and the world blurred as I ran towards the back alleys of Raven's Stone Square. I was petrified at being alone, but I could see the sense behind Jasmine's plan. I was there in a few seconds.

I hid in the darkest area of the one of the alleys, but in a place where I was still able to see the end of it, where Jasmine and Zed would come through.

I bit my nails as a full minute passed. Then five minutes.

When nearly ten minutes had elapsed, I was seriously starting to get worried. What had happened to them? A hundred and one scenarios passed through my head. All of them included Blade and a knife. My legs slowly gave way as despair overtook.
