I opened my eyes and regretted it immediately, closing them again as a headache ripped through my brain. I had little to no recollection of what had happened last night so I decided to open my eyes again to see where I had passed out.
Luckily I was still in my own house, surrounded by my familiar bedroom walls. I shifted on the bed and instantly knew I wasn't alone. I glanced over to see who it could be and I was relieved to find Savannah sound asleep.
I stood from my bed and threw on some pants, heading downstairs to the kitchen. Her father was going to be pissed that she didn't come home last night but at this point in time I could really care less. We must have had a great night, if only I could remember it...
I finally made it to the fridge and grabbed out the eggs and milk, placing them on the counter. I figured I would make us breakfast of just some scrambled eggs while we talk about what had happened last night. About halfway through making the eggs, Savannah appeared in the doorway and sat down at the island stool.
"Good morning. You wouldn't happen to have any aspirin to go with breakfast, would you?" I chuckled and grabbed the bottle from the top of the fridge, handing it to her.
"Good morning. Well from your apparent hangover I can come to the conclusion that we had a great time last night." She nodded and stood up, heading to the cupboards and grabbing herself down a glass. She filled it with water and washed down the pills before she placed her head in her hands.
I divided the eggs in the pan and placed them on each plate, buttering a few pieces of toast I had thrown in between scrambling the eggs. I handed Savannah a plate and poured us each some orange juice before sitting at the island with her.
"So what all happened last night? I mean, I remember some of it but I'm drawing blanks on the rest." I picked up my fork and began pushing the eggs around, staring down at my plate.
"Well we came back here and drank through three bottles or more, I'm not really sure, and after we stared at the stars we kinda..." She paused a minute and I looked at her, curious even though I already knew the answer. "We slept together and now we are here."
A thick silence fell over us as we ate our breakfast. Savannah finished her plate before me and rinsed it off before heading into the living room to watch the news. Even though I had barely touched my food I wasn't very hungry so I ditched what remained in the trash and took care of my plate.
I grabbed a cigarette from the drawer and stepped out back, lighting it and taking the first hit of the morning. I looked over the yard and noticed the bottles and blanket still lay out where we left them. I wasn't expecting to see a place in the grass that looked like it was recently dug up. I couldn't remember even being back here in yard before last night.
Something was gnawing at me deep inside as I continued to stare at the space of dirt amongst the grass. I finally tore my attention away as Savannah stepped onto the patio and walked to my side.
"I wonder how pissed my dad is right now." She giggled and walked out into the yard, picking up the empty bottles.
"He's probably red in the face right now but who cares. We will both be eighteen within a few months then what's he going to do?" I walked out and grabbed the blanket, folding it carelessly before draping it over my arm.
"Yeah but I should probably get back soon. We don't need him reporting me missing and dragging your name down more than this town is trying to." I nodded in agreement and started off inside, Savannah following close behind.
Once inside the house I placed the blanket over the back of the couch and went to grab the keys. I could hear Savannah throwing away the bottles and once she was done she went to grab her things. She joined me in the garage and hopped in the already started car, buckling in before I took off toward her place.
We arrived at her place pretty quickly and she leaned over, planting a kiss on my lips then she slipped from the vehicle and ran to the front door. I continued to watch from the car as her father opened the door and began shouting at her. She pushed past him and slammed the door before he could stop it. That's when he decided to come after me.
He began his angry trudge toward my car, his fists clenched and ready to beat me to a pulp. I decided not to fight this battle and backed out of the driveway. Her father began to pick up speed, trying to catch me before I could drive off but he wasn't fast enough.
I sped off back to my house and parked in the garage, heading into the house. I threw my keys in their usual place on the table and stepped into the kitchen to do the dishes. As I was drying the dishes and putting them in their place I couldn't help but draw attention back to the dirt spot in the yard.
I need to know what's out there...
I threw the hand towel down on the counter and set the last glass in its spot. I made my way back to the garage and grabbed the spade, heading to the backyard once I was ready. I stood above the strange spot and took a deep breath before I began my dig.
"Do you think this wise?"
I ignored the voice, eager to find out what had been bothering me about this spot.
As I dug deeper I uncovered what I had feared was in the hole.
