What If?

I arrived at Savannah's place at the time I had told her and parked the car. I stared up at her front door and let out a deep sigh as I began to fill with a unfamiliar nervousness. I swallowed back my nerves as I exited the car and slowly made my way up to the front door.

I knocked gently the first time and waited a minute before knocking louder when I realized nobody probably heard me. I ran a hand through my hair as the door swung open and Savannah's father glared down at me.

"What do you want?" I could hear Savannah run down the stairs and stop behind him.

"I'm here to take Savannah out on a date." Surprisingly I didn't stutter but that didn't stop him from increasing his glare.

"Just go finish the game, daddy. I'll be home before midnight." Savannah pushed past her father and stood by my side.

I smiled and turned around when I realized her father was going to continue to glare at us. She followed after glaring back at her father and carefully made her way into the passenger seat while I held open her door.

Once she was inside and the door was closed, I made my way to the drivers side and hopped in. I revved the engine to life and backed out of her driveway before starting down the street.

"You look lovely. Isn't that the dress you wore to prom last year? I'm surprised you still have it." Out of the corner of my eye I caught Savannah smile, a tint of blush spreading across her cheeks.

"I liked it too much to get rid of it and I now have a reason to wear it again. " I grinned and turned on some A Day To Remember to add some background sound, masking the silence.

Twenty minutes later we were pulling up to the downtown Applebee's and were making our way inside. We stood in line behind three groups of people as we waited to be seated. During our wait Savannah noticed the wrap on my hand and grabbed it, looking it over.

"What happened? Your hand was fine when I was at your house earlier." She started unwrapping it and I pulled my hand back, replacing the wrapping.

"Some guy at the gas station decided to get smart and I taught him a lesson." Savannah shook her head slightly and moved forward as one group was seated.

"Why do guys always have to solve their problems with their fists?" I cocked an eyebrow and stared at her for a second.

"What? He shouldn't have come at me and don't start that Vannah. You've been in just as many fights as the guys at school and don't get me started on the bullying." She crossed her arms angrily and turned away from me.

"I don't know why you keep bringing that up. I already said I was sorry so just drop it. It's in the past Sorrow!"

"Is she really?"

My anger turned to shock as I heard that voice again and looked at everyone around, wondering if anyone else had heard. Suddenly there was a tap on my shoulder an I snapped my attention to the brunette waitress. Seems like we were to preoccupied to notice everyone else had been seated.

"Excuse me. Could you keep it down? You two are disturbing the customers. If you are ready, I can seat you now." I nodded to her as I was lost in my thoughts and followed her to the back table on the other side of the restaurant.

How could nobody have heard that voice? I was so confused but I was also slowly coming to the conclusion that I'm losing my mind. How long would it take before I completely lost it?

"Sorrow? I'm sorry if I pissed you off. I know I tortured you for years an that's not something I can expect you to just forgive me for but I don't want that to hold us back forever either." She looked down from me to the table we were now seated at and played with her hands.

"I'm sorry too. I've been under some stress lately and I took it out on you..." Savannah looked up at me as a waitress came over and took our orders.

Soon we were served our food and we began eating. The sound of clanking silverware and small chatter was the only thing breaking the silence that had fallen over us. I hated the fact that things got awkward between us after the fight and I finally finished eating, looking up at her.

"Look I'm not mad okay? I'm sorry if this date sucks. We can head back to my place and hang after this or I can take you home if you want." I pushed my half eaten meal away from me and sat back as I watched Savannah.

"We can go back to your place. I'm not ready to go home and deal with my father yet. Besides, I'm having a great time. It's been a couple years since I've been on an official date so this is nice." She smiled as she pushed her plate toward the middle and finished what was left in her glass.

I paid for our meal once the waitress returned and we headed back out to the car. The drive home was filled with useless chatter and soon we were back at my place, cracking open one of my fathers many liquor bottles he kept in the cellar. I poured the whiskey in two glasses and grabbed them, bringing the bottle along.

I stepped out into the warm night air and walked over to the blanket we had set in the middle of the yard. It was a nice view of the midnight sky and it was littered with millions of stars.

I handed Savannah her glass as I sat down and held my glass out to her. She smiled and lifted her glass to mine, toasting our night. We both took a drink and I set mine aside, laying back on the blanket so I could stare at the sky. After a few moments of silence I glanced over at Savannah then back to the sky.

"What would you do if I was the next one to disappear?" Savannah glanced over at me, shocked by my sudden question.

"I don't know..." She bit her lip in thought as I sat up and grabbed my glass.

"Seriously. What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and I was gone, taken by the murderer and never heard from again?" I downed what was left of the liquid inside my glass and poured another.

Savannah also picked up her glass and finished, handing her glass to me so I could refill it. She remained silent the whole time which worried me a bit. What if she didn't like me the way she liked Conner? No, that's impossible. She put me through hell because she liked me. That has to count for something right?

"I would get the cops to start a search party, not that they don't have some out already but that's beside the point. I would then contact news stations and put out information, hoping someone had seen you recently." She stopped and looked down into the glass that was still rested in her hands.

"Sorrow, I'd be lost without you."
