A Taste of Sanity

The sight alone brought me to my knees as I vomited in the grass. The stench was horrifying and made it almost unbearable to be near the hole.

"So weak and pathetic."

"Just shut up." I replied back to the voice as I wiped my mouth with my sleeve.

I looked back to the hole and stared down at the few animal bodies that were decomposing. Something underneath was poking through the dirt and it didn't look like it went with the other bodies. Looks like I would have to dig further down to reveal more .

"Can you handle what's down there?"

Okay, enough was enough. I was so tired of this person following and questioning my actions.

"Show yourself! Stop hiding and tell me who you are!" I circled around, trying to spot anyone around but to no surprise I was all alone. I really was falling crazy to my loneliness.

After a few minutes of silence I nervously returned my attention back to the hole and grabbed the shovel. I scooped up the bodies and tossed them aside as I began to dig around the strange object, finding what I feared was hidden.

I fell back to the ground, unable to take my sight off of the human hand that laid within the hole. Was I the one that put it there? I couldn't have. I would've remember something like that so maybe it was an animal? A dog perhaps?

I regained my composure after another minute of staring down in that hole and buried everything again, not able to bring myself to uncover anything deeper. I couldn't stand to think I would uncover a body if I continued to dig and It was best if no one finds this at all. I would be in a lot of trouble even if I wasn't the one who put it there.

I decided it was best to completely cover it up as to not draw attention and so when I was finished covering the hole back up, I decided to head to the store. Nobody would question a garden in my backyard so it would be the perfect cover up. I was thinking of planting grass seed but that would take too long to grow and the spot would still be visible to the world. I just needed to make a large patch of the yard dirt and nobody would question my motives then.

I finally made it to the store after a few blocks of walking and grabbed a cart. I would need a lot of things to keep this garden alive and the secret buried for good. I looked around a minute before I started off to the gardening isle to begin my mission.

"Do you really think this will work?"

I groaned audibly as I glanced around, finding myself alone once again. Whoever the fuck was following me really needed to stop the charade. I was growing weary of his games.

I continued on, picked out a bunch of seed packets ranging from cucumbers to tomatoes and threw them in the cart. Next I was onto soil and tools which should be easy enough. After grabbing what else I needed, I payed for my stuff and was on my way back home. Surprisingly Savannah hadn't returned so I figured her father was pretty pissed off.

I made my way through the house and out into the back yard, dropping my bags near the dirt pile. I looked around for a minute trying to figure out the best place to start. I gave up after a minute and just dove in, grabbing the cucumber seeds from the bag and headed to the far corner to dig up the yard.

After a few long hours of digging and planting I gave up as soon as the hole was covered over. I stood up admiring my work and grabbed the gardening things, placing them inside the shed. Once that was complete I brushed myself off the best I could and headed inside to get cleaned up.

"No amount of dirt and plants can hide what was done." The voice cackled as it echoed through the undisturbed house.

"Show yourself now! I'm sick of playing your fucking games!" I looked around as I spun in my spot, the house still undisturbed and Clear from any movement.

I waited a few more minutes, trying to see if I would get an answer but it never came. I sighed heavily as I trudged up the stairs. I gathered my clothes for the shower and stepped into the bathroom, locking the door behind me.

I started stripping down and started the hot water on full blast. I needed a long hot shower to relax from today's events but as I went to enter something in the mirror caught my eye.

There he stood, the devilish grin spread from ear to ear as he followed my movement with his empty eyes. I let out a scream in fright as I stepped away from the mirrored version of me, or was he? Was it possible that wasn't even my reflection at all? I could have been seeing him the whole time.

"I AM you. You are me. We are the same and yet so different. You are weak. Let me help you." I honestly didn't think it was possible but his grin spread wider as he continued to assess my soul with his eyes. All I could do was stare at what I thought was my reflection as the words escaped my shock in the form of a whisper.

"How is this possible?"
