My 15th birthday is in exactly 1 month, unfortunately. Now you are probably thinking, why is she not happy her birthday is in 1 month? So to answer your question I have to tell you what happened exactly 2 years and 11 months ago, on my 12th birthday. But to tell you that story I need to tell you a different story, one that goes back to when none of you were even born...
When the world was created, many creatures that are now considered fictional, or even mythological, were created with it. After a few million years, some of these creatures started to disappear, and reappear as stories told by humans. No one knows why. No one knows how. The fairies though, are one of the two creatures that still exist. The second one, as you can probably guess, are us, humans. Do you remember that when you were little kids, you were told that when someone says that they don't believe in fairies, a fairy dies? Well forget that. It's not true. Nothing happens when you say that. But something did happen to the fairies. That's why you don't see fairies flying around everywhere. No one knows why. No one knows how. But somehow, fairies just started to become... Invisible. Their everywhere. You probably go to school with at least 3. Or work with some. But you just can't see they're fairies. To you, they just look like regular people.
So millions of years after the world was born, there were no fairies to be seen. For the past 1 million years, the fairies have been looking for people who were born with the power to see them. There is one person born with that power in every generation. One person that the fairies know about. There is a prophecy, about a girl, that will save the fairies before they disappear forever. This girl will embark on a quest the fairies will send her on. A quest that she may never come back from.
And here my story comes in. When I was 3, I started seeing the fairies. first I would see only a few, but by the time I was 10, I saw them everywhere. Normal people in the street would suddenly sprout wings and fly. When I was little I used to tell my mom about the fairies. She didn't believe me. She never believed me. She doesn't even remember my name.
"Amy, go clean your room" my mom would say.
"It's clean. Always was clean, always will be. And my name is Amber. You gave it to me, you might as well try to remember it."
It was always like that. My mom never cared about me. My dad though, was the best dad you could ask for. But unfortunately, he died when I was 8. He was the only one who believed me about the fairies. Sometimes I think that maybe he didn't really believe me. Maybe he was just trying to make me happy. If that's what he was going for, he did it.
My mom is a different story. Her bad side is that she doesn't care about me. The good side is, she doesn't care about me. She never asks me how was school. She never tells me I should get some friends. She's never worried if I disappear in the afternoon and come back home after midnight. She never asked where I'd gone. Sometimes I like it. Sometimes I don't.
School was horrible. I had no friends. I didn't get teased either. Most times. People just didn't care about me. Not my mom. Not kids at school. Only the fairies did. They cared more about the quest than they cared about me. About the prophecy. About the end of the world.
I did have one friend. A fairy named Star.
"You've got one month left. Don't you think you should start taking this quest seriously?" We were sitting on the fallen tree in the forest we always sit on when she said that.
"What quest?" I knew exactly what quest she was talking about.
When I was 12, I got a note in the mail written in messy handwriting:
To: Amber Rose Smith
You are required to come to the clearing in the forest with the fallen tree today at midnight
Do not be late!
It didn't have any name on it. I knew it was from the fairies. Who else would contact me through a note and tell me to go to the forest at midnight without leaving a name? I also knew it wasn't Star, because she is never that careful with notes like this. She never thinks about what would happen if my mother knew where I was sneaking out to. She never thinks about anything. She was 10. She wasn't supposed to think about things like this.
So I went to the place the note told me to go to. When I got there, three fairies were waiting for me. They were beautiful. One was red, one blue, and the other purple. Their wings were shimmering in the moonlight, so bright and pretty it was hard to look at them.
"You came" the blue fairy said.
"Of course I came. It's not like I have anything else to do at midnight on a school night." I answered sarcastically. You had to be careful with fairies. They could see through your face and words. They always knew what I really meant even if I didn't say it directly.
"We all know school isn't "your thing"." this time the red fairy was talking.
"Don't act so surprised that I came. You knew I couldn't stay at home after that note." I knew you couldn't run out of words with fairies without being humiliated; and I wasn't in the mood for being humiliated today.
"OK let's get to the point. Violet, it's your turn." the blue fairy turned to Violet for her to continue the conversation.
"You've heard of the prophecy." she started.
"I..."
"Don't act like you haven't. We believe you are the girl the prophecy speaks of. "
"No I'm not" I argued
"Well you don't have a choice but to try to be." I had no idea what she was talking about this time.
"Fairies are starting to disappear, Amber, for real this time." the red fairy said like she could read my confused thoughts. My first instinct was to ask "how do you know my name?!", but I already knew the answer to that. My second instinct was to say "I don't care. It's not my fault.", but I knew that won't stop them.
"Then what am I supposed to do?" I finally said.
"You, are supposed to fulfill the prophecy." This was the blue fairy talking.
"I don't know the full prophecy."
"That's why we called you."
"Well then what is it?"
"Here. Read it." Violet handed me a rolled up, crumbling piece of paper.
"When the world of magic will turn unseen
and the world of the mortal won't be so keen,
a girl will rise, of orange and green
from not one world, but a girl in between
to embark on a quest to save one side.
From the depths of her heart, power will rise
she will find the one boy who sees the unseen
to help fairies unite with the beliefs and the dreams.
But three things she must do to complete this quest.
The quest that will end on her fifteenth birthday
when the sun sets
the first is to find the boy with the chest
then to fall to the depths of something unseen
and to sacrifice something that will never be foreseen"
"So...." I didn't know how to react. I knew that this prophecy was about me.
"What do you mean, "so"? This prophecy is about you! "a girl will rise, of orange and green." You have orange hair and green eyes. "from not one world, but a girl in between." you're mortal, but you can see fairies. What other proof do you need?!" This was the red fairy.
"Ruby, she's 12. Don't get mad." said Violet
"I know it's about me. You don't have to convince me. But how am I supposed to do that? What, am I supposed to just go around the globe looking for him?"
"You'll figure it out." that was the last thing I ever heard from the fairies.
