Long Nights

The lightning flashed in the window across the room, the brightness stinging my eyes. The massive crack of Thor's thunder followed shortly after. Thor had been in a bad mood since this evening while everyone was at dinner in the Great Hall.

I groan and pull the blankets up to my eyes, hoping to block out the world around me. But, Thor had other ideas. A clap of thunder so loud it shakes the very foundation of the house, erupts. I jump in pure fear, my eyes wide, blankets now at my thighs and every hair on my body standing on end. Once my heart has stopped trying to burst through my chest, I fix the blankets again, pound a frustrated fist into my pillow, and lay back down, squeezing my eyes shut.

Within a few seconds of peace, something heavy flops on to my back, scaring me just as much as the thunder outside. A soft warble lets me know that it's nothing to fear. I prop up on my elbows and turn my head as far as I can. "Can't sleep, Bud?" I ask, staring at the night fury head that is currently weighing me down. He grumbles in answer. "I can relate," I say, patting the top of his head.

I sigh, knowing he's not gonna let me return to my restless sleep until he's happy, so I drag myself out of my warm bed, bringing my blanket and pillow with me. Instructing toothless to lie down, I make myself comfortable on the ground, using his side as a back rest, laying my pillow on his back and draping my blanket over my body.

The storm rages on continuously, and we still don't get amy rest, but I feel safer knowing Toothless is beside me, which adds more subtleness to the howling winds and pounding rain that I am no longer enduring alone.
