Into the Archipelago(HTTYD one-shots)

Well...?

It's late when I walk through the door for dinner, Toothless trailing behind me. "There he is. Why don't you join your old father for supper?" Dad asks, as soon as I shut the door. I lift my tired eyes to look at him, offering a small smile. He places his mug on the table, grinning at me from under his beard. 

"Sorry, Astrid and I were cleaning up the academy after an incident with the A-Team." I apologize, plopping down in my chair. I can feel his eyes on me even when I have my cup in front of my face as I gulp the cool water.

"So, how is Astrid doing? I haven't had a real conversation with her in a while."

"Uh... she's fine," I answer, feeling an awkward conversation coming on.(awkward for me, not him) 

He nods, chewing his food. "Good. Good. I really like that girl. We have a lot in common you know. Born warriors, her and I." I nod, having heard this a million times before. "She also tries her best to keep you out of trouble, which is nice since I can't keep an eye on you all the time," he adds. We sit staring at each other, the air eerily still. I flip open and close the small compass on my left arm, awkwardly, giving myself something to mess with. "Well... when are you gonna ask her?" he finally blurts out, breaking the silence.

"Ask her what?" I ask dumbly, looking up at him. 

He leans back in his large chair, chuckling. "Oh, you know." 

The truth is, I do know. I just don't want to have the conversation. I shrug, taking a bite of food. "I don't know. I haven't really thought about it," I answer, innocently. That's not true either. I actually had thought about it, but still hadn't found the perfect time to discuss such things when Astrid and I have been focussed mostly on searching for new lands. 

"What are you waiting for son? You're 20 years old." He was right. What was I waiting for exactly? What more of a perfect time to ask than right now...? No. Definitely need to spend more time thinking about it.
