Highway ( Chapter 9 )

Daryl's POV

4 Weeks Later

Over the last four weeks we haven't found a new place to call home, and Cherokee has been having more and more asthma attacks and seizers. We have to find somewhere to stay long enough for me to find her some more medicine.

We are now on a highway searching abandoned cars.

"Everyone down, under the cars, NOW!! Rick yells.

Bella runs in the RV with Delilah and Glenn, Dale is on top of the RV, Cherokee and Sophia are under a car together, Rick and Carl are under one car and the car next to them has Lori and Carol under it, I don't know where Shane is, and now me and Merle are under the car across from the one with Cherokee and Sophia. I look at Cherokee she is starting to cry, I bring my finger to my lips, silently telling her to be quiet. After a few minutes all the walkers are past us, or so we thought. Sophia crawls out from under the car a walker instantly trying to grab her, she runs jumping over the guardrail on the side of the road, "SOPHIA!!" Cherokee screams running after her, "CHER-" I was cut off when Merle puts his hand over my mouth, "shhh, if you scream for her it will only draw more walkers." Merle whispers.

When we are sure all the walkers are gone, we all come out of our hiding spots. "Dare, where is Cherokee??" Bella ask.

"She ran after Sophia, walkers were after them. We are leaving to go find them now." I answer, pointing in the direction they ran.

"Who all is going??"

"Me, Merle, Glenn and Rick."

"Find our baby girl and Sophia."

"We will, I promise. I love you." I say leaning down kissing her head, "I love you too." She says. I then do the same with Delilah.

"Daddy, can I come help look for them??" Delilah ask.

"No, it's fixin' to get dark, I need you to stay here with mommy. Okay??"

"Okay daddy. Be safe."

"We will."

After tracking the girls till their trail went cold, we head back to camp, on the way we run into a walker, I walk over jabbing my knife in its already dead skull. "It's got flesh in its teeth, it's fresh." I say

"Do you think it's human??" Rick ask.

"Only one way to find out." I reply, grabbing my knife. As I jam my knife in the stomach of this undead beast, my heart pounds against my chest, as I pray the flesh is not my little girls, or Sophia's. After many minutes of gutting the walker, "Son of a bitch had a woodchuck for dinner." I say.

"We should head back." Merle tells us.

"Merle, how am I going to tell my wife that I couldn't find our daughter?? How am I going to tell Carol I couldn't find Sophia??"

"I'll tell Carol, you just talk to Bella, tell her the truth, that we lost their trail, that we will find them tomorrow."

"Thanks for talking to Carol."

"No problem baby brother."

As we arrived back at the road I could feel my heart start to race when I saw Bella and Carol standing there sadness painted on their faces.

"Is that blood??" Carol ask pointing at my blood covered shoes.

"It was a walker." I answer

"Did it get them?? Did it bite one of the girls??" Bella ask with a worried tone.

"No, as far as we can tell it didn't come in contact with the girls." I say.

"How do you know that??" Bella ask.

"I gutted the dead bastard, to make sure."

I walk over to Bella who is starting to cry, wrapping my arms around her, pulling her close, kissing her head. "What if she has a asthma attack?? She doesn't have any of her medicine with her, the little bit she has left is in the RV."

"She's gonna be okay, we are going to find her tomorrow. Before anything can happen, she knows how take cover for the night, how to get water or food if they need it, and she knows how to track. Okay??"

"But if she is okay, why hasn't she followed their tracks back??"

"Maybe they are just tired so they are waiting till morning after getting some rest."

"Dare, I hope you're right."
