In the barn

With Lacey and our very little belongings up a tree, and 12 dead walkers later, we were finally able to call this abandoned barn ours for the night. Clearing the body's put of the way, it was hard to believe it was dark already.

Much to Daryl's dispair, I took out more walkers than him which I could tell annoyed him, so I was sure to tease him about it. I like to prove to people I'm not week- you know women's rights and all.

"You think it will be safe for us?" I asked wiping the walker blood from my knives onto my jeans.

"Safer than staying out in the forest" Daryl replied, yanking a arrow from the last ones eye. It was female and its stomach looked more decayed than her face which was covered by bloody black hair.

"You go get the kid, I'll get some firewood and meet you inside." He ordered, trudging back into the forest..

Burnt hazel sparks flickered from our source of warmth and light which glowed in the blackness of the night. Caution begged to take over from lighting a fire in a wooden barn, but Daryl insisted on it. Light crackles could be heard as the wood was still wet but it didn't bother me, just gave me a sence of safety.

Soft snores escaped Lacey little mouth on my lap as I leant against the wall of the barn, half a metre away from where Daryl was layed on his side, head propped up on his elbow as he chewed a stick of hay-like wood.

"So why are you doing this?" I had finally asked the question that had been bugging me for the past couple of hours.

Daryl's emerald eyes flickered up to mine, somewhat offended as he sat up slightly.

"What do you mean?" He questioned, not bothering to take the wood from his lips.

"Saying with us? Protecting us? Helping us in a world that has quite utterly gone to shit. You could easily survive much easier on your own- without us. But you stay,so why?"
I tried to keep my voice quiet, for Lacey's sake.

Daryl looked down, looking like he was having an internal debate of what to say.

"I can leave if you'd like" he started to stand up so I stood with him, blocking his path.

"That's not what I said" he started to inch closer to me.

"Pretty much damn is!" He shouted.

"Stop Lacey's asl-"

"Ask me if I care!" Right now I was slightly frightened by his bipolar actions.

At this point I stayed silent and we both stood still, is if, if we were to move we would've been slaughtered on the spot.

Cautiously I lifted my eye line to meet Daryl's, who had gotten much closer to me from the last time I checked. He was so close I could hear and feel his angered breaths blowing my hair slightly.

He looked hurt.

"Daryl, please. I didn't mean it like that." My voice was soft as quite frankly I was standing on egg shells right now. I brought my right hand to his stubbly cheek as I spoke. "I want you here, I want you with us, I want you to stay with us- with me."

We stood like this for a few moments for him to reply but he said nothing and turned to return to his previous position, but slightly further away from last time. I didn't even bother to look as I stood there, like a fool, wondering what the hell had just happened.

"You might wanna get some sleep, we have a lot of walking to do tomorrow" were the last words I heard that night before I sat to drift into an uncomfortable slumber.

"She snores". "Ew she dribbles too!" I was woken up by a small child poking my cheek and giggling in my ear.

"C'mon kid, leave her alone" Daryl was the one who spoke this time. My eyes flickering open, I was soon blinded by the bright light from the sun through the gapes in the wood.

"She's awake though!" She exclaimed

I rubbed my eyes and sat up, grabbing my girl and giving her a quick squeeze. "Morning sweetie" I greeted her as she giggled. I may have been tired but hearing her sweet giggle never failed to put me in a better mood.

The fire had been stomped out, most likely by Daryl and the barn doors were open meaning he must want to leave soon.

I looked over to a less grumpy Daryl. "Morning" I said, testing the waters as he adjusted something on his crossbow.

He looked over at me as I smiled at him, a silent apology for the night before.

"Morning" his gravelly voice replied.

My excited little 3 year old scrambles away from my arms and turned to face me.

"Mommy we caught a squirel" she said excitedly. My smile completely dropped from my face
"What?" I looked over to Daryl who was still cleaning his arrows. "You let her go hunting?"

"No, I went hunting, she watched." He said this so simply it annoyed me- and he could tell I was pissed at him. Disgusted I shook my head and realed my attention back to Lacey.
"Go put your coat on, we need to leave soon." I commanded.

"Bu-"

"Now Lacey." I didn't mean to be pissed at her, she was just a child, but my anger towards Daryl right now was unreal but for Lacey's sake we need to stay with home. He can help us.

I took this as an opportunity to go speak to Daryl. I could tell he expected to be shouted at but I'll leave that for another time.

"Where is it that were heading to exactly" I asked, keeping calm.

"I have a group, live in a community type place, there's other kids there and its safe for both of you"
This took me by surprise. A community?

"Why were you out here alone if your part of a group?" I questioned, slightly unsure about whether this was true.

"I was on a run, lost my motorcycle, found you. Here I am." He stood up whilst saying this."ready to go?"

I turned to look at Lacey, I disapproved of her messy hair but it will have to do. Daryl wasn't the type of person to wait around.

"Let's go"
