There is a deafening ringing in my ears that wails like a never ending tornado warning. I open my eyes, only to see nothing but clouds of ash grey. My first thought is that I am dead, maybe in heaven, but from the smell of burning and the aching of my body, I could be somewhere else.

Slowly, very slowly, the ringing subsides, only to be replaced with the sounds of moaning mixed with crying and faraway screaming. That’s when the smoke clears; that’s when I see where I am. I see that I am back, back at this dreaded place that has shaped my life. Shards of glass fall from me as I stand on shaky legs. The blast hit me the moment I’d walked back in the doors, disobeying my father when he’d told me to go wait in the car.

Now I scream for him, choosing to walk into the smoke filled darkness, rather than turn, taking those few steps that would lead me back outside to safety.

Daddy!” I shout only to be suffocated by the thickening smoke as I walk past the damaged stores lining the walkway.

Now I see that the ringing in my ears has not completely gone away. I hear it, as it becomes louder and louder. I ignore it, walking over bodies of those not as lucky as me, and running my hands through my blood and glass filled hair.

That’s when I find the source of the noise, the source of the ringing. A baby, lying unhurt wrapped in a pile of clothes. I lean down to pick up the baby, hoping to at least save this one life but as I bend down things become hazy. My vision is clouded with nothing but darkness and suddenly, everything goes dark.
