The bell had rang about twenty minutes ago, but I was still propped against the brick plastered wall, finishing off a cigarette and chewing the inside of my cheek. When the ashes burnt my finger, I threw the little stub onto the ground and squished the cigarette with my shoe. Before I pulled the black side door open, I turned my phone on silent and closed my Adidas bag shut. Inside the school, a few people just getting dropped off lingered at their lockers, the sound of nearby classrooms filling the air.
I pulled open the door to my homeroom and casually strolled in, tuning out the lecture from the teacher standing at the front of the classroom. "Are you listening?" I heard when I sat down in the blue plastic chair. I shook my head and fixed the black choker around my neck, laughing along with the few kids around me. "Leave her alone," Sage yelled at the teacher. Sage is my bestest friend, she has known me since my change and has always been there for me. "Detention for both of you then!" I accepted the pink slip and fell back into my seat, counting the minutes until the day would end and I could go to afterschool detention.
I got up at the seventh hour bell and slung my backpack over my shoulder, taking out my phone and tiptoeing to detention. "Where have you been?" The teacher in charge asked me, smiling. This teacher was actually cool, she would let me smoke and play on my phone in here, unlike the other teachers that liked to just yell at me for being such a terrible student. I shuffled into the seat next to her desk and smiled, taking my bag off. "I have to go make some copies for my classes," she smiled. I nodded my head and turned on my phone as she pushed the door shut.
"Hey," I snapped my head to see two guys slouched in their desks, staring at me. "What?" I asked. I wasn't real interested in socializing. "What's your name?" The one that spoke was tall and had brown hair and eyes, and he was wearing black skinny jeans. "And why should I tell you?" I asked, making it clear that I was really annoyed. "Ouch, daddy." The one next him smiled.
He was wearing denim skinny jeans, a gray T- shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and a blue bandana. "I'm Jc and this is Kian next to me," he said. I placed my phone back in my bag and positioned myself so I was facing them completely. "Rylie." I will admit that these boys were super cute, but they seemed like they would just take up my time and annoy the shit out of me. "No talking!" A kid in the corner yelled. We glared at him before Kian kicked my foot, making my leg jerk to the side. I kicked him back, Jc joining in on the game. "Stop!" I laughed as the two smiled. "Don't like losing? Do you?" Jc and Kian laughed.
When the timer laying on the teacher's desk went off, I pulled my backpack on and walked out the door, leaving the two without an answer. "Glad that's fucking over," I whispered to myself, pulling out my Marlboros. I pushed the big black doors open and met Sage outside as she grabbed the keys to her car. How was it today?" Sage asked. I shrugged my shoulders and threw the finished cigarette on the ground. "Nothing too unordinary, thanks for skipping." I laughed as Sage unlocked the front door with a silver key once we got to her house.
"Was anyone new there?" She asked. I shrugged once again and stepped inside, taking off my bag and shoes. "Only the most annoying people." I thought to myself.
