As we walked back to Sage's place, Kian pulled me aside, yanking my arm away from the group. "What is it?" I asked, noticing the look on his face. Kian's throat bobbed up and down, his eyes filled with something dark, but not dark enough for me to fear him. "We need to talk." He sighed. I pulled him over to the basketball hoop in my driveway, which I hated, after everyone went inside. "Kian, what?" I asked once again. He rested his head in his hands, bowing over the edge of a bench seat. "Why would you do this?" He finally broke.
I stood silent, basketball in hand and bowed my head, my shoes suddenly becoming very interesting. "How could you go off and throw yourself on some guys, overdose on drugs, and then come back here like everything is okay, Riley it's not!" He began to cry. I didn't know he cared about my life so much, we were only friends. I sat silent, an explanation for my behavior lacking. "Answer me Riley!" He started to raise his voice, his eyes becoming even more red and puffy.
"Why do you even care about me?" I asked, throwing down my basketball. Kian stood up, making me feel short again. "We just met! You could kill me for all I know!" I screamed back. Kian stood silent, maybe I was finally getting to him. "See, that's what you think! Riley, I have known you since first grade! We grew the fuck up together, but maybe you didn't grow up enough" He yelled. I pressed my index finger to his chest and lowered my voice.
"You're right, I didn't grow up. I don't know you, and you definitely don't know me." I opened the door to Sage's house and closed it, locking the bolt so Kian couldn't chase after me. I slid down the wall and balled myself into a fetal position, tears spilling over onto my cheeks. "Where's Kian?" Jack said, slowly walking over to me. I sniffed my tears back up and wiped them away. "He had to go." I whispered.
"Come on, let's go in the back with Sage." Jack smiled, pulling me up. I followed him into the back room where Sage was playing music and dancing around. "Sage!" I smiled. She ditched her dancing and ran over to me, leaping into my wide open arms. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there!" She cried into my shoulder. I pulled away and wiped her tears, "It's okay, it was all my fault." I whispered. Everyone in the became quiet.
"Guess what." Sage smiled. Cameron stepped up to her side and wrapped his arm around her waist, Sage holding up her hand, a silver band flashing in front of me.
"Guys! What the fuck, Congratulations!" I giggled and jumped on the two, giving them a warm and tight hug. Cameron squeezed my back as he hugged me, making me a bit uncomfortable. I pulled away and climbed onto Sage's bed, taking out my phone and opening my camera. "So where's your love at?" Cameron smiled.
Kian? Oh shit. "What do you mean?" I asked, even though we both knew what he was talking about. "Kian, don't you two have something going on?" He asked. My heart stopped as tears dripped down my cheeks again, I just couldn't stop them this time."I have to go." I cried, backing out of the room. I made my way off of the front porch, but was stopped when a pair of strong arms caught me and pulled me into his lap. I recognized the scent of him, his warm touch and the steady breath he seemed to have. "Riley, please forgive me." He whispered. I turned myself around to see Kian frowning, my heart shattering into a million pieces. "I love you!" I smiled, kissing his soft lips.
Riley, what are you doing?
