Shane Cox is a grubby, short and thoughtful detective from Ohio. His life is going nowhere until he meets Beth Nolan, an ugly, curvy woman with a passion for books.
Shane takes an instant disliking to Beth and the forgetful and ruthless ways she learnt during her years in the city.
However, when a ghost tries to prod Shane, Beth springs to the rescue. Shane begins to notices that Beth is actually rather brave at heart.
