Andrew Greenway is a special and sympathetic orphan raised by a clumsy and deranged father. Eventually he gets a job working as a psychiatrist for the bold Lady Platt of Platt Garage. The unlikely couple rapidly succumb to a sizzling passion.
On the day of their wedding, a predatory aunt escapes from the attic of Platt Garage and starts a fire. Believing that Lady Platt is dead, Andrew flees from the church and wanders the windy moors for days until he is rescued by a optimistic nurse.
However, although Lady Platt is blinded by the fire, she still breathes. Without Andrew she becomes creepy and stupid. She turns to alcohol for comfort. The ghost of the aunt from the attic haunts her.
Meanwhile, thinking Lady Platt is dead, Andrew accepts a marriage proposal from his saviour, the nurse. However, one night he believes he can hear Lady Platt calling, "Andrew, where are you? Andrew come home!" and he returns to Platt Garage.
On Andrew's return, he finds Lady Platt drunk and without sight. Mistaking him for the ghost of the predatory aunt, she attacks him with a gun and Andrew Greenway dies.
As she attends to the body, Lady Platt realises what she has done. Driven mad with guilt, she hatches a plan to destroy the next generation, but there is no next generation and she dies of consumption two weeks later.
