Chapter 1 (The Audition)
I tapped my foot on the floor nervously as I waited in a small room with other contestants ready to show the judges what they had. I sat in a chair at the far end of the row and tugging on my shirt and worrying. I was trying out for X-Factor USA today, and was nervous out of my mind. I looked up and saw my mom come up next to me. She put a protective arm around me and whispered something. "Don't stress, Shay. You'll do great."
"Thanks mom," I said back thankfully. She didn't say much, but I didn't need her to. She just rubbed my back and smiled, and that's all I needed. It was quiet for a while until the door opened and I turned my head to see who it was. A girl, maybe a bit older then me, walked in with what appeared to be her sister, brother, mom, dad, and grandparents. She sat across the room from me, and I suck a few glances at her and her brother. In some strange way, they looked familiar.
"Hey, I'm gonna go find Ari and your father. I haven't seen them for a while," my mother told me.
"Okay, come back soon."
"I will." She left and I was alone, so I pulled out my phone so I didn't look that much like a loner. I still kept sneaking glances at the boy and girl. Did I know them from somewhere? Surfing? Skating? No defiantly not I didn't have any people I could call friends here in Miami, and I was one of the only girls in my school who surfed and skated. I was definitely not a normal girl who cared about clothes or boys, so that probably why I didn't have many friends, but that didn't matter. Those events and music kept me busy. I soon gave up on pinpointing them, so I went on my Twitter. Nothing interesting had happened, so I went on tumblr and Instagram. I was scrolling through my home page looking at my old life in California when I noticed someone standing above me. I looked up.
"Can I help you?" I asked the boy. He was tall with long dark brown hair. I recognized him. He was Chris Jauregui, and his sister trying out, must have been Lauren Jauregui. I was new to the state, but I knew that she was very popular in the junior year and Chris was the most popular and hottest guy in the freshmen year, not like a gave a fuck, though.
"Yeah. You look familiar. Do you go to Carrollton?"
"Yes, freshmen, why?"
"I go there."
"Yeah, that's cool," I said like I didn't even know.
"Shay, right?" He asked.
I nodded. "Chris, right?"
"Yeah, I heard you moved from Cali," He said sitting next to me.
"Yeah, three weeks ago."
"Wow, how's Miami treating you?"
I shrugged my shoulders. "Eh." I wasn't about to tell him that I got picked on everyday at school. He opened his mouth to speak, but at that moment, his mom called him over.
"I guess I have to go. I'll see ya around, then. Good luck." He said getting up and smiling at me.
"Thanks. Tell Lauren the same."
"I will." He left across the room and I kept looking around the room waiting for something interesting to happen. My Eyes wandered down to my outfit. I stood up and tugged on my cropped top and skater skirt, wishing that they would both be longer. My twelve year old, kid sis, Ari, had picked out my outfit, saying I had no fashion senesce Whatever, tee-shirts, jeans, and converse worked for me.
I saw my parents coming back and then I heard my number called. They followed me to the backstage and soon I was in the wings. I reviewed my song lyrics in my head and thought about my stage presents. "This is the time when i prove myself. No way am I allowed to mess up," I told myself. Soon I was told to go on, so I did. I causally walked to the middle of the stage in front of the judges.
"Hey," I said to everyone.
"Hello," Simon said to me. "What's your name?"
"Shay Hale."
"Very good. How old are you?"
"Fourteen."
"Wait your fourteen. You look it least sixteen." LA interrupted.
"I am fourteen," I said with a light laugh.
"What song are you going to sing for us today?" Simon asked putting us back on track.
"Chariot by Gavin DeGraw."
"Nice. I'd like to hear that." The music started and I started singing. I lost myself on stage and I danced and sang and had fun. Too soon the song was over and I stood before the judges waiting to hear their answers.
"Sounds great," LA said.
"Alright. I thought it was wonderful. Yes," Britney said.
"Yeah. It was amazing and you have a good strong voice. You remind me of me when I was younger. Solid yes," Demi said.
"That is why we let fourteen year olds audition. Yes yes yes," LA said.
"I have to say I like the song choice. It was a bit different than the ordinary new pop song. It was good. I like you and you have a lot of potential. Four yeses," Simon said.
"Thank you. This is awesome. You guys are awesome. See ya at bootcamp," I said leaving the stage. When I got back I was showered in hugs by my parents and Ari. We hugged, but were whisked out fast, so the next act could come. I saw Lauren was next, when we passed their family. I felt a nudge at my shoulder, and looked up.
"You're really good," Chris said.
"Thanks," I said back. He turned and walked away with his family and I with mine.
