Chapter 8 (Truth is...)

I woke up to the feeling of someone pushing my back lightly. "Shay. Are you awake?"

"Am now," I said back. I turned and saw Chris smiling down at me. I looked around. I was in his house and sleeping on his couch. Then, I remembered what went down last night. My mother came back and was home right now with Ari.

"I'm gonna go to school today," He told me. I sat up on the couch and looked at him.

"Yeah. I think I should too."

"Do you need any clothes and stuff, becasue you can use Lauren's stuff. I'm sure she won't mind."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah. We have like an hour before the first bell rings so I'm assuming thats plenty of time."

"More than enough." He smiled and I left down the hall to Lauren's room. I looked around her closet for something suitable for me to wear today. Most of her closet was filled with dresses, skirts, or sparkly things, so that posed a challenge. In the end, though I found a pair of torn medium wash high waist shorts that were plain without any "acessories" on them and a Nirvana t-shirt. i slipped into my black chuck taylors and put in my red gaugesand perscription glasses.

"Are you ready?" Chris asked as he came in the room.

"Yep."

"Do you need food or anything?"

"Can I just take an apple or something?"

"Yeah. There's one on the counter." I walked to the counter and picked it up.

"Let's go!" I said happily as I picked my board up. He smiled and grabbed his by the door and we left quickly. The ride there was uneventful, but when we got there people stared at us.Probably because he was one of the most popular guys at our school and I was considered a low life. We stepped off our boards as we neared the doors. He looked at me and gave me a reasuring smile. I smiled back and we went in.

He was imediately called away by people in his "group," so I told him to go. Even though he didn't at first, I told him to. He didn't have to stay with me through the whole day, that made me feel like a drag or something.

When he left, I went to my first class, which was on the other side of the school, so it was good I got here early. On the way, I felt someone slap my back, so I turned around to see a group of girls looking at me. I was pretty tall, but they were looking down on me, probably because they were wearing sky high heels.

"Can I help you?" I asked with a sugary, forced smile.

"Yes," the bleach blonde one said.

"Get away from her boy friend!" The brunette yelled. The blonde one who spoke earlier gave her a glare, and she cowered away.

"Chris? You mean? I've hung out with him for the past week and he hasn't said one thing about a girl friend, so it's hard for me to believe that your statement is correct," I said mellowy.

"Listen, he's officaly single, but I'm ready to change that. I'm the girl that every guy likes at this school and he is considered a guy at this school, so odds are, he likes me."

"I can't belive that. You're beautiful, but your personality says otherwise." She looked at me offesivly. "Sorry not sorry, ma'm," I said quickly as i walked off.

"Excuse me. Yoou cannot say that to me. You shouldn't be talking."

"Ah. I don't consider myself looking like a model, but i do consider myself, humble, self-reserved, indpendant, and chill. Four things that you aren't." She looked surprised, and I smiled.

"Any way," she composed herself. "Stay away from him and you might just live through freshmen year."

"Okay. Thanks for the heads up," I said as i left the group of girls. Seriously, Chris doesn't belong to anyone. Even if he gets a girl friend soon, it won't be her. She's mean and nasty. Uh, why am I even careing about this. Sure he's my friend, but I don't really care about who he dates. I mean i've known him for about three weeks.

(about a week later)

"Hey," I heard him say as he wrapped his arms aroound my waist. "It will be alright." I cried into his chest and he just held me. God. I feel bad for this boy, always haveing to stay strong for me.

"Ari's gone," I whispered.

"What?" He looked down at me imediatly.

"She's gone. When I went home today, she wasn't there and mom wasn't either. I searched her room and her phone and skate board weren't there. There was a note that said she was running awya and I knew she ment it. She-" I was cut off my an awful choking sound from my mouth.

"We'll find her. Have you called you mom?" I shook my head. I didn't trust her. I didn't trust her with my life, how was I supposed to trust her with Ari's life? "You need to tell her. Shay, you can't do things on your own."

"No. I've been doing things alone for my whole life. I can manage."

"No, you gotta open up to someone. If not your mom, then me. I'm gonna be here for you."

"So you think I'm helpless."

"I didn't say that. No one can do things by themselves-" I cut him off.

"So what? I'm not like anyone else. I'm completely independant."

He huffed something I couldn't hear, but ended up speaking. "I know. I know you like being by yourself, but you need help you can't do everything by yourself. When was the lat time you had a break?" He paused. "You need to get some weight off your shoulders. I'll be willing to take that weight, but..." He paused again. "I need you to trust me. Open up to me. With all your other friends back home, I'm, no offense, but the only one here. Please let me in." I wiggled myself out of his grasp and ran out of his house. "God. Shay! Wait!" I heard him say. I kept running away, not because I was in ahurry to find Ari. Because everything he said, I now realised was true.
