~~~~~Chapter 7: The Infant~~~~~
Still thinking. Thinking hard. Thinking so hard my head could explode with questions, curiosity and fear. I stare out the window, looking out at the horizon, and in focus, the building. Then I feel like going to see Maggs again to talk more in depth about the abandoned orphanage. I understood what she meant, but then I didn't. I understand the story line, but don't understand about the signs I get.
As I walk towards the door, through the long driveway, skipping along the bike path and through the rough trees, I hear something. I immediately stop, dead still. I listen to the rustling of the tree branches and the sound of the slight breeze. I hear something again, I couldn't really hear what it said. I started to ignore and move on to Magg's house. As soon as I take a step, I hear "Help me." I stop again. I hear it another several times, and each time, getting louder and louder. I start running as fast as I can towards Maggs house. I keep on hearing "help me" repetitively as I take one step, it gets so loud it pierces my ears. As I reach Magg's door, I rapidly knock on the door multiple times and ring the bell furiously, shaken with fear. As soon as I see the knob turn slightly, I have this sudden shock of relief, when I see Magg's calm and gentle face, I run into the house and shut the door as quick as I can. I breathe heavily and hug Maggs. She seems frightened now, seeing me at this state. I ask for some water. She walks towards the kitchen and grabs a cup, filling it with icy cold water, my favourite. "Sweetheart, are you okay, you're as pale as snow!" she says, with a worried look. "Oh Maggs, I have so much to tell you!" I respond, still breathing heavily.
Maggs passes me the cup of water, I gulp the water down my throat, now feeling much better. "Maggs, on my way to your house, I heard the words help me!" I shout. "Oh no, it's a sign." she whispered. "What sign, oh Maggs I am REALLY starting to get scared!" I yell, trying to get her more attention. "Calm down Marie, you're probably just hearing things, it happens!" she responds, having an untruthful look. "No way, I know what I heard, every time I heard the words, it kept on getting louder by the second!" I try to explain calmly. She tries to pull a calm look on her face, obviously didn't work. "Well, anything to say Maggs?" I ask, still silent. "Marie, have you had any other past experiences, EVER?" she asks, now having a convinced look. "Well I have had a dream, like I told you before." I reply. "Any other signs you have seen or heard?" she asks, sounding like a detective. "Nope, at least not yet." I say. Maggs pauses in thought. All of a sudden, she has a scared look on your face. "What?" I ask, feeling concerned. "The infant." she says, as still as a rock. "The what?" I ask, having no idea what she just said.
"Earth to Maggs, do you hear me?" I ask, getting some attention. Maggs stays still, still having that scared look on her face. "Please Maggs, answer me!" I yell. She suddenly snaps out of it, and asks "Yes?" "Maggs, what do you mean by the infant?" I ask in confusion. Maggs sighs heavily. "The night of the murder, there was an infant child, she was the one that died last," she says "The infant was apparently a curse brought from hell, this infant stayed in the orphanage for 3 days, those 3 days were called "The 3 days of misfortune." she says, with a shaken voice. "What happened on those 3 days?" I ask, feeling curious. "So, day 1 was when the infant came in, thought to be the most beautiful infant ever seen, but that day, the infant was eating, then as soon as that spoon went in the infant's mouth, a fire started in the kitchen." she said. I keep on listening. " The cook had no idea how the fire started, the fire came from the pantry, it was just a sudden explosion, but at that minute, the person feeding the infant saw the infant's eyes turn from brown, to red." she explains. I am starting to get interested. I mocked her to continue. "Ok, second day, the infant was being put into bed for an afternoon nap, as soon as the baby closed her eyes, the orphanage immediately lost power, the orphanage turned pitch black, even at broad daylight for the 3 hours, the equivalency of the time frame of the infant's nap ." Maggs says, looking into my eyes. "Lastly, day 3, the day of the murder, the baby was watching tv with the staff of the orphanage, they took her to the nursery, gave her some toys, as the staff watched her play, she got a toy gun and a bunch of soft toys, and mouthed the sound of the gun, pow, pow." Maggs pauses, and sighs deeply again.
"And that night, the murder happened, the last thing the witnesses heard was 'Help me' and was said to be from the infant, that night the infant died, along with the rest of the children and staff." Maggs said, finishing off with her head down. "Maggs, remember how you said that the orphanage was for children that were disabled?" I ask, thinking that maybe the infant was some how disabled. "Oh yes, it was believed that that infant wasn't medically disabled, the application for the infant child said the disability was of telekinesis." I was quite confused on what "telekinesis" meant. "Maggs, what's telekinesis?" I ask in wonder. "Telekinesis is a unique ability of the mind, it's when you can use mind power to control things." she replies. "So the infant used the power of the mind to control all these things?" I ask, starting to feel a bit uncomfortable. "Yes, and from then on, this whole neighbourhood knows about 'the infant' and has never been forgotten." Maggs concludes. So 'the infant' is the key to my dream, the baby, the cries and what I heard on my way to Maggs must of been from...THE INFANT!
