I sit on the cool stone ground, the temperature lowering with the sun. My stomach growls and reminds me of the the failed attempt at finding a food source. If this desert doesn't disappear soon, we'll all starve. I lay on my back and close my eyes.
"I'm hungry." I say, half asleep.
"Shut up. Don't you think I know you're hungry? I'm hungry too." He replied, glaring at the floor.
"No need to be so rude. I was just trying to make conversation." I say, sitting up and crisscrossing my legs.
"Rude? Honey, you haven't seen rude. Rude would be tossing you outside to the other tributes! You're lucky I saved you! You should be dead now!" He retorted, raising his voice.
"Oh yeah? Well, I didn't ask you to save me! I actually was begging for death rather than see your face again!" I reply, matching his tone.
"Oh, please! You were just begging me to save you! And I only did it because you were pitiful! I literally couldn't care less about you!" He yelled at me, his voice echoing around the cave.
"Ooh! Look at you! Using big boy words! You must be soooo smart! You could probably win this whole thing, couldn't you?" I spit, venom laced in every word I speak.
"I could, and I wouldn't even regret killing you." He stated in a menacing tone, loud enough for it to echo around.
His words bounced off the walls, crashing into my ears and sending wave after wave of anger and sadness washing through me.
I avoid his gaze, running out of the cave, leaving my backpack and worn down shoes. I don't know where I'm going, but I know I have to get away from him. I stumble on the hard packed earth, dropping to my knees and sobbing in my hands.
Why did he say that?
Why? Why?
Why?
I cry into my hands, mumbling words like "stupid", "why", and most of all "Dart".
I wipe my eyes with the heels of my hands, and raise my head to look at my surroundings. A group of four tents surrounds me, a glowing, crackling fire a little in front of me, about the center of the small camp.
Footsteps crunch up behind me and stop. I can almost hear the smirk on his face.
"Hello there, Doll."
