for the next couple of weeks, louis would come into the therapy session in hopes of achieving some sort of communication with harry. he'll try to spark up a conversation but will only receive a curt nod or an acknowledging smile. he'll turn towards dr.perez - who would always be eyeing them shamelessly - and give him a hopeless look, earning a look of encouragement back.

harry would never notice the quick exchange, though, and louis is grateful for that. he wouldn't want harry to somehow find out him and dr.perez' agreement - if you can even call it that - because louis wouldn't want him to think that he feels pressured into befriending him.

louis had been drawn to the boy ever since the first session, and what dr.perez considered him to do was that extra push he needed to present himself to harry.

and it seems that the less harry communicates, the more louis craves his attention.

- - - -

louis can admit it himself, he's always been a persistent and stubborn person, so its not long before he starts thinking about harry and only harry.

the boy consumes his every thought, making louis wonder if someone photocopied a different picture of harry into each of his brain cells.

from the way harry walks - curving a foot inwards because he's pigeon toed (louis hates himself for knowing that) - to the way that he eats.

knowing subtle things in harry's characteristics worries louis.

he's getting attached.

and the realization didn't creep up on him. it threw itself at him and landed with a punch right in his gut.

louis couldn't get attached. he shouldn't.

but it is a little too late now.

all of this happened when harry talked to him and smiled today. actually, he didn't smile he grinned. his perfect row of straight, pearly whites on full display, and his head thrown back as he barked out the most contagious laugh louis has ever heard.

louis wasn't expecting it at all. especially since what he was saying wasn't even that funny. he was telling him about the new school he had started a couple days ago and how this one kid decided to announce to the class that he and his hamster were soulmates and proceeded to come to school the following day with his hamster in his pocket.

according to harry the kid was "absolutely mental" and louis couldn't but snort into the back of his hand, effectively hiding his blush and shit eating grin because that was the first time harry had spoken to him since the 'thank you' muttered on the cracked sidewalk 2 weeks ago.

"how's school for you, harry?" louis decides to ask one day.

harry shrugs and mumbles a "fine, i guess." under his breath.

louis pinches his eyebrows together and licks his lips. "you guess?"

"it's just school, louis."

"i know that but- "

"please," harry begs, his voice is quiet.

"please what?"

"let's just drop the conversation; it isn't important."

"i just want to know what school is like for you, that's all, harry. i'm not trying to be intrusive." louis' feelings aren't hurt, really. but his voice says other wise and harry immediately feels guilty about it.

"i know that - g-god, i know that, louis. it's just that," he heaves a long sigh before continuing. "school isn't the best thing to talk about for me, okay."

he can already tell that harry is restraining back tears because his lips are curved into his mouth, his glassy eyes are fixed to the ground, and louis hates himself for making harry feel like this.

he knows he shouldn't do it. he knows what could happen, but he does it anyway because he's louis and he's drawn to risky things.

he takes harry's balled fist and places his significantly smaller hand on top of it, his fingers caressing harry's knuckles softly until he unballs his hand and looks up, his red lips parted slightly and mossy eyes wide.

"okay." louis says.

and the conversation ends there because louis wont push. he wont allow himself to push the subject.

it's as easy as that.

- - - -

the following week, louis is sitting with harry on their usual spot on the rug, they're conversing and smiling and laughing and louis doesn't want to watch it end.

so he doesn't.

"harry," he starts. "do you want to do something fun when we get out of here?"

"w-what kind of fun?" harry asks.

"we'll just go somewhere. i want to show you a place."

"i-i don't know, louis." harry says skeptically, picking at the skin around his nails.

louis can tell he wants to. that there's just something holding him back. then he remembers harry's extreme anxiety and he wants to punch himself for being so utterly stupid.

"nothing's going to happen," louis feels like he needs to assure him.

harry curls his lips up, his smile soft, and his eyes softer.

"i'll look after you." louis promises.

his eyes stay on harry to gauge his reaction but all he can see and hear is the reluctant "okay" that leaves his lips.

- - - -

louis takes harry to the field deep in his backyard where the hundreds of flower grow in the spring and summer time. harry gapes around like a lost child before he laughs happily and falls down onto the endless mattress of roses, and daisies.

louis thinks it's the most beautiful sight. harry's sprawled out on the flowers a content smile on his face and he's staring up at the sky, some stray flower petals stuck to his curls already.

"this is b-beautiful, louis." he sighs happily, sitting up and smiling up at louis.

louis sits down cross-legged in front of harry and laughs fondly at himself because harry looks so fucking beautiful and the hundreds of flowers behind him bring out each one of his features and he still has those flower petals stuck in his hair.

"thanks. i wish i was the one that planted all these flowers but that would be the biggest lie." louis laughs and harry chuckles heartedly.

after a couple of minutes of comfortable silence and stealing looks at each other

(and blushing. a lot of blushing)

, harry speaks up.

"w-why did you bring m-me here, louis." he asks quietly, digging his front teeth into his bottom lip.

louis eyebrows knot together and his lips form into a thin line.

"why wouldn't i take you here?"

"t-this place is so lovely and i - i don't know why you b-brought me here." harry sighs and louis wants to turn back time to when harry was happy and smiling and didn't ask questions that are insecure and self degrading.

"because i wanted to, harry. i think- i think," louis mentally preps himself for what he's about to say.

"you're lovely, harry, and i just - i wanted to share this with you. is that so hard to believe?"

harry opens his mouth to speak but only proceeding to close it. he pulls his knees up to his chest and buries his head between them. "i'm sorry."

"harry," louis whispers, shifting from his position on the ground and crawling towards him.

"i'm so, so s-sorry, louis. you j-just wanted to do something n-nice and i m-messed it all up. i'm s-sorry."

"stop apologizing, love." louis soothes.

"louis just - please. just h-hold me."

louis almost jumps at his words but instead he cradles the boy close to his chest, digging one of his hands into his curls and using the other one to run it up and down his back.

the strong hold that louis has on him and the way that he's whispering soothing words into his hair is what keeps harry bonded together. although, a few tears have already fallen from his eyes, louis makes him forget about those.

and as for louis, even though this didn't go exactly as planned, there are beautiful flowers surrounding him that are almost as beautiful as the perfectly imperfect boy he's holding. butterflies are hovering above them, dancing in the wind to a choreographed dance only they know and he can see the orange sun setting in the distance, the sky turning into dozens of different hues of blues, orange, and yellow's.

and when harry whispers:

"i can feel your heartbeat."

louis realizes this is all he needs.
