song of the chapter: hallelujah by panic! at the disco

"It seems that everything here is completely in order, Ms. Ingle," The doctor smiled, looking at my test results.  "Just keep on doing what you're doing, stay away from drugs and alcohol, don't get too stressed, and you should be good!"

"Thank you." I smiled at the doctor, hopping off of the examination table and gathering all of my belongings.

"You're very welcome. Now just-"

"No!" We heard a woman wail.

Confused, doctor Grey and I stepped out into the hallway where the scream came from. And upon seeing who it was, my breath hitched.

"What happened to my son?!" Melissa McCall screamed at a doctor, pushing against him and sobbing.

She let out another scream of pure, heartbreaking anguish and then collapsed to the floor, causing me to run over to her immediately.

"What happened?!" I asked urgently, holding her comfortingly whilst the doctor that she was screaming at cleared all the onlookers. "What happened to Scott?!"

"Who are you?" He asked, looking between me and Melissa.

"I am Scott's English teacher and family friend," I said with slight authority, pulling the wailing woman closer to me. "Now tell me what the hell is going on!"

"H-He's dead!" Melissa screeched, sounding how I imagined a banshee would. "My baby boy is dead!"

Then it was silent. I could see people talking and screaming and crying, but all I could hear was white noise. Not even a few days after the epidemic/assassination plot that infected/almost killed all of my students, the strongest of all of them was dead. I couldn't believe it -- the boy who was the reason for me falling in love was dead. He was gone. Just like that.

"Elizabeth?" I heard someone call distantly. "Ms. Ingle, can you hear me?"

"W-What?" I asked, now in a different room. "My name is Effy- How did I get in here?"

"You went into shock," The doctor from before answered me. "Melissa is in the morgue with her... son."

"I... I need to get out of here," I said, panicking a little bit. "Now."

"Is there anyone I can call-"

"No. I-I have to go."

"Elizabeth, wait!"

"My name is Effy!"

And that was the last thing that I said before running out of the second examination room I had been in that night. I needed air. I couldn't fucking believe it. Scott was dead. A boy of the age of  seventeen was dead, taken from this world before his even had a chance to begin. I felt the familiar sting of tears prick my eyes as I ran down the hospital halls, taking impulsive lefts and rights, climbing up numerous flights of stairs before reaching the point where I couldn't run anymore. The roof.

Taking a minute for some deep breaths, I tried calming myself desperately, but nothing seemed to work. I hadn't even been a teacher for a full year at Beacon Hills High and already there has been assassination plots, the school has been wrecked, like, three times, I have turned my ex-arch-nemesis into my current lover, and one of my favourite students was now dead. If this was how the rest of my life was going to turn out, I had a better shot at moving back to New York and continued the life I lived once before.
