song of the chapter:  gangsters paradise by coolio (ma jam)

"You ready for this?" Mrs. Martin - Lydia's mother and the school's biology teacher - asked me as students lined up for the PSAT.

"I'm ready for it to be over," I laughed. "I've got a date with my boyfriend tonight, and I am so ready for it."

"That's right," she smirked. "Lydia has told me all about how close you are with the deputy. Good choice, he's a cutie!"

I sighed and rolled my eyes at her assumption, groaning softly.

"Jordan and I are not a thing!" I whined. "He's my best friend. Nothing more, nothing less. These pingle rumors are starting to get really annoying."

"My apologies. But... if he isn't your boyfriend, then who is?"

Blushing, I looked down and rocked back and forth on my feet.

"Hale." I murmured.

"What?"

"Hale."

"I'm sorry, sweetie, I can't hear you."

"Derek Hale." I spoke clearly, causing her jaw to drop slightly.

"The Derek-"

"Yes, the Derek Hale."

"But I thought you hated each other!"

"I thought we did too..."

"But how-"

"'Netflix and chill' ended up being more than just Netflix and chilling."

"You slept with him?!"

"What?! No! What the hell, Natalie?! How do you even know what Netflix and chill means?!"

"I may be old, but not that old, Effy."

Groaning, I put my head in my hands and sighed, feeling myself blush.

"We didn't have sex." I said firmly, "We had a heart to heart and the next thing you know we're kissing and professing and confessing things to each other and long story short, I have a boyfriend and he has a girlfriend and we're in love, I suppose."

"...I will never understand modern romance, Effy."

"Neither will I," I chuckled. "But either way I am happy with what I have."

"Well that's good, dear. He's very cute as well."

"You're telling me."

We laughed a bit more and sipped on our drinks, both not wanting to be there on a Saturday morning but both really wanting that overtime. I for one, needed some new clothes.

"I'm gonna head back to my class now. I'm so behind on grades, it's crazy." She smiled. "Thanks again for filling in for coach, I honestly have no idea where he is."

Truth be told, I knew exactly where he was. He was passed out in his office, probably after a long night of drinking. Part of me felt sad for the man, knowing that he was fifteen years sober, but I knew that he needed sleep, so I let him be.

"No problem!" I smiled. "Have fun!"

"Oh, I will." Natalie laughed. "See you later!"

"Bye!"
