"Once upon a time, in a faraway place called pre-school was when this whole story started. It was play time, and the teacher thought it was a perfect day for us to spend some time outside on the newly installed playground."

-

Lovino, a smaller, younger version of him was sitting under a tree, far away from the playground where the other kids were playing. He slowly ate his tomato, gazing at the playground. "This is stupid." Lovino muttered, his eyes travelling to a certain blond headed, ball of sunshine kid that he deemed a little interesting than the rest. Lovino felt himself smiling as he watched this random kid bounce around the playground, including every other kid around the boy in his little game.

"I should talk to him." Lovino made up his mind and stood up, walking over to the boy that caught his attention, tapping on his shoulder. The boy turned around and flashed Lovino a smile that looked almost like the ones that could win a million dollars. "Hi!" The boy greeted, "What'cha want dude?"

"Ciao." Lovino tried to smile a bit. His smile was lopsided and showed his little dimples a bit. "You look fun." Was all that came to mind; he mentally screamed for being extremely horrid at social interactions. The boy in front of him giggled and grinned, "I do? That's great to hear!" He then extended a hand towards Lovino. "I'm Alfred. A future superhero in the making!" Lovino hesitantly took Alfred's hand and shook it. "I'm Lovino. Just Lovino." He controlled his cursing and anger outbursts, keeping them to a minimum. "Nice to meet you Lovino! Let's play!" The blonde pulled Lovino by the hand to the sandbox that was a good ammount away from the annoying kids.

Alfred tugged Lovino down to sit next to him on the sand. "We're gunna make a sandcastle!" the kid proclaimed, picking up a shovel and bucket, scooping up some sand and threw it into the bucket. Lovino copied him and grabbed a shovel, scooping sand up and dumping it into the bucket. For once, the hot-headed Italian started to smile a bit, there was something about him being with Alfred that felt special somehow. "You know," Alfred started to talk, making Lovino stop what he was doing to look at the other. "Your smile is really nice." He rubbed his hands together to get off a bit of the sand before poking Lovino's right cheek. "You should smile more, just like me!"

The two of them continued to create sandcastles, or as Alfred called them: kingdoms. Each time a new little sandcastle was created, Alfred took some leaves or whatnot and decorated the castle; he believed that sandcastles needed to look pretty as well. The blond was what Lovino classified as the people that were able to make him smile easily. "Hey Alfred?" He called, making said little boy hum in response. "Do you wanna be best friends?"

"Yeah!" Alfred tackled Lovino into a hug, giggling once Lovino lay flat on the sand with Alfred on top of him. "Of course I wanna be your best friend!"

"Okay, good. No taking it back or else I'll kick your ass."

"I promise I won't take it back." Alfred reassured the other. "Heroes don't break promises as big as those!" Lovino cracked another smile. He awkwardly wrapped his arms around Alfred, hugging him. "Thank you."

"Anything for you, Lovino..." Alfred giggled, his joy radiating off his little body. It somehow made Lovino feel happy as well. It's weird how his body reacted to Alfred... Maybe he's getting sick. Sickness, right, that's it. Lovino was getting sick, end of story. After a while, Alfred pulled away from the embrace and picked up his shovel again. "We have to make more kingdoms!"

"Why? There's enough for every single damn person in the world!" Lovino huffed and looked at their sand creations. It already filled up half of the huge sandbox. "No! We need more! There's gunna be more people moving into the other kingdoms!" The American grabbed the bucket and shovelling more sand into it. "Plus, if we make more, the bigger kids will be very tired to break all of them!"

"Fine, but I hate doing a lot of work." Lovino wouldn't admit it, but he didn't really want to stop playing with his new best friend. It was the most fun he's had in a long time. "Once we're done, we'll ask our teacher if we can drink some water at the water fountain!"

"I call going first, you ass."

"'Kay, dude." Lovino heard Alfred reply. As they continued to make sandcastles, Alfred explained how the kingdoms needed more 'expansions'. Holy shit did Alfred have a huge imagination. Lovino guessed it was from all the reading he and his family does. "Alfred?"

"Yeah dude?"

"How much do you read?"

"Papa makes me read everyday with him!" The little blond smiled up at Lovino. "Papa says that reading is good for your head." Lovino stared at Alfred, awestruck that this kid was imaginative and somewhat smart. Damn, thanks for setting the bars high.

-- Definitely, Maybe --

Day after day, Lovino would come to school and spend time with his new best friend. They would color together, tell each other stories, spend nap time near each other, go on adventures together, everything that best friends their age would do. "You know, my papa would tell me stories about how a knight in shining armor would come and rescue a princess in a castle." Alfred spoke as he and Lovino were drawing. "And, whenever I listen to stories like those, I really wanna be a knight and rescue someone like that."

"That's so much work," Lovino commented, drawing a picture filled with tomatoes and pasta. "The knight should just find someone closer to him, not just go on this mission that's going to hurt a lot just to rescue a stupid princess."

"That's not how it works, Lovino!" The blond punched Lovino's arm lightly, his heroic smile never leaving his face. "The knight goes on this big mission to save the princess because he loves her." He explained and finished his knight drawing. "Papa says that love makes people do really really crazy stuff!" Lovino rolled his eyes and huffed. "I'm not gunna be in love if this is how much work it is."

"You don't know unless you try, Lovino!" Alfred reminded him, folding his drawing to the best of his abilities and placing it on his Batman bag that hung from his behind seat. "I'll help you rescue your princess, Lovino. Just like a best friend should!" The Italian sighed. Well, as long as he's happy, Lovino thought and agreed with Alfred. "Sure, Alfie, whatever you want."

"And then," Alfred took a piece of paper and quickly drew him, Lovino and a random girl beside the little Italian. "You guys will run into the sunset and have a happy ever after! Just like in the books my papa reads me!" The blond showed Lovino his drawing with a huge grin. "Just you wait Lovino! Your best friend Alfred will help you save your princess!"

"What about you? What about your princess?" Lovino didn't want Alfred to only worry about him, he felt kinda bad. "I'll save her after I help you! My best friend comes first!"

"You ass. It's always you go first before anything else!"

"But that's not the true work of the hero!" Alfred laughed and threw his arms around Lovino, rubbing their cheeks together. "Lovi always comes first! I can call you 'Lovi' right?"

"Sure.. Alfie." Lovino smiled and nodded. He kinda liked that; how his name - well, now nickname - roll off Alfred's tongue. It sounded special. There it was, the sickness again. It felt like he wanted to throw up, but he couldn't. I think I needa tell mama to take me to the doctor's office, Lovino mentally noted.
