"College was tough, the teachers thought I was a nuisance at times. I hung out more with Tonio rather than Alfred.. Which sucked.. I never understood why at the time. Anyways, Tonio and I became best friends who could tell each other shit and stick up for each other and whatnot.."
-
It was lunch time, the two 'best' friends ate together outside where not a lot of people could bother them. Being alone was delightfully quiet; just how Lovino liked it. He didn't really like having too much company, it destroyed his social skills. "You know Lovino.." Tonio nudged Lovino's side, getting his attention. "There's a carnival coming up."
"You can go alone, bastard." Lovino replied and ate his sandwich; lunch between Tonio and Lovino always ended up with the Italian getting pissed somehow. "No! No! What I meant was, there's a carnival and we could work there and earn some money!" The Spaniard explained his thoughts thoroughly, using his hands to add emphasis. "If we get money that means we'll at least be able to get an apartment once college is done!"
"College is finished in another two years, idiot! I don't like doing a ton of work! You know that!" Lovino said, in between bites. Working means socializing, socializing meant going outside of his comfort zone, going outside of his comfort zone means not a very happy Lovino; plus it meant he would curse more often. "So? The earlier the better! Besides, we're doing it together aren't we?" Tonio grinned and spooned some paella into his mouth. "Fun right?" Lovino looked away and felt his chest tighten. Oh no, not again. "Fun my ass! I don't want to go."
"Alright, if you don't want to go, then we'll go there for fun!"
"Even worse!" Lovino shoved his sandwich in his mouth to occupy his mind from making his cheeks go all hot. "I don't want to go around some place where it's so damn loud and you there annoying me too! My head will explode!" He spoke in between bites, which was very difficult with half of a sandwich in his mouth. "You're over exaggerating!" The taller male laughed, his grin still on his tanned face even though Lovino insulted him. "We'll go for a few minutes and then come back! We won't stay there too long so your head doesn't hurt!" Once Lovino swallowed and digested his food he opened his mouth to speak. "A few minutes?"
"Yes, a few! Like, maybe... 10 - 15!"
"And we'll leave when I wanna leave?"
"Uh, sure, yes."
"Fine." Lovino gave into Tonio's idea. Something about the other made Lovino's brain get all jumbly. He had an urge to punch Tonio, but at the same time hug him... Which was a bit uncanny and unusual. His brain never got that way before... Unless it was for English; something he didn't have the time of day for. Tonio's face brightened when Lovino's answer reached his ears. "Stop smiling so much... Your cheeks are going to hurt."
"Sorry, I'm just really happy Lovi!"
"Damn idiot!" Lovino huffed and looked away, he only allowed one person to call him that. That was their thing, and only theirs. "Don't call me that!"
"Sorry! I think it's cute! It sounds like 'Love'!" The Italian rolled his eyes and punched Tonio's arm. "Yeah, I don't care! Don't call me that! Anything but that!" Tonio chuckled and nodded; Lovino's expression was priceless. "Fine! I promise I won't! Just don't get mad!"
"Then stop being dumb! I know you're smart, so use that head of yours!" Lovino packed up his lunch, snapping his container top to the bottom and put it in his lunch bag, scowling. Tonio nodded and copied Lovino's actions, putting the leftover paella container into his lunch bag. "I swear," Spoke Lovino as he and Tonio stood up. The Italian was slightly shorter than the Spaniard. "You're smart as all hell, yet you're so oblivious and forgetful." The Spaniard reminded Lovino of someone else he knew, and grew up alongside. "Everyone forgets sometimes! You can't blame me!"
"Everyone forgets sometimes, yes I agree, but not as much as you." The pair started to walk back to their respective dorms together, stopping at the place before they parted. "I'll text you before I pick you up, alright?"
"Yeah, Tonio, I understand, just go." Lovino pushed Tonio in the right direction to his dorm. "Before, I don't know, something happens."
"That's a one in a million chance, Lovino."
"Yeah, well, fuck that." The Italian turned around and started to head to his dorm room. He's a total idiot, thought Lovino as he walked.
Lovino sat around on his couch, playing on his phone. He finished getting ready as soon as he made it home and was passing time waiting for his, somewhat, best friend. "He takes so long.." He spoke his thought, biting his lip. "Hopefully, he's not blowing me off again for another one of his damn baking lessons." His phone started to buzz, signalling he received a text. "That must be him." The Italian got up and walked over the door, opening it. "You ass, you take too long." He huffed as he looked up at Tonio. Stupid Spaniard, making him wait and worry; not like he'd say that out loud. "Sorry, I wanted to make sure my brother, Afonso, you guys haven't met yet, didn't ruin our dorm before I left."
"I thought you blew me over again.."
"I wouldn't do that! C'mon! Let's have fun at the carnival!"
-- Definitely, Maybe --
The two friends finally made it to the carnival. It's so colorful and loud, Lovino noted as Tonio bought their tickets. It gave off the vibe of something Alfred would enjoy. "Okay! I got the tickets! Let's go Lovino!" The happy-go-lucky Spaniard took Lovino's arm and dragged him all over the place. "Go slower! I'm going to fall over!"
"Oops! Sorry!" Tonio slowed down and looked down, his smile still glowing. "I just really wanna win myself a turtle."
"A turtle." Lovino repeated, his face was emotionless. "Really?" Which he earned an eager nod from the other. "Yes! A turtle. You can win one at this throwing game!" Tonio pointed at the brightly colored booth; it was a ring toss game that required the player to get all the rings on some of the bottles. "Sounds interesting."
"Yeah! I know!" Tonio didn't catch the fact that Lovino was being sarcastic. "Let's go!"
"Oh. What joy. We're winning a turtle." Lovino huffed and allowed Tonio to drag him around the carnival. In his mind, he wanted to spend time with someone else instead, someone he missed spending time with. "You know, this feels kinda stupid." The Italian said as Tonio was throwing the rings onto the bottles, missing a couple times. "What do you mean?"
"It's simple. You're just doing it wrong.." He replied and took the remaining rings from Tonio and throwing them perfectly onto the rings. Tonio gasped in surprised as Lovino won the game. "Can I get my turtle?"
"If it'll make you shut up, sure." Tonio's eyes lit up with pure joy as he received the turtle from the person who was running the booth as a prize. Oh lord, Lovino thought as he watched Tonio hug the bag. What have I done?
