Chapter 1 (Redone)

My name is Nikki Springs. I'm just like any other teenage girl. I look like my mother but I have the eyes of my father. My mother's a nurse but I've never known what my father does. Most kids go to their parents jobs on take your kid to work days and have so much fun. Me, I get the same reply every time I ask.

“No Nikki, we're not allowed to have our kids come to work, it's a very busy place”

His way of making up for my disappointment is buying me whatever I want, most kids wish their parents would do that but I don't like secrets. Tomorrow is the dreaded day, take your kid to work day. Now since I'm older I'm hoping he'll finally let me come.

When the bell rang I jumped out of my seat and practically ran the whole way home. I can't wait to get home and ask him. I have a feeling this year will be different. I burst through the door to see my mother and Alec in the living room. I tossed my backpack to the floor and sat on the couch awaiting my fathers return home.

“Welcome home Nikki” My mother said kissing the top of my head as she walked past me on her way to the kitchen.

“Thanks mom” I said pulling my crap phone out of my pocket.

“How was your day?” She asked from the kitchen.

“Good, yours?” I asked.

“Good, would you mind watching your brother for a while? I have to run to the store for some last minute dinner things” She asked coming back into the living room with her coat and purse.

“Sure” I nodded.

“Thank you honey” She said putting Alec in his play area.

“Any time” I said before going back to my phone.

It was an old BlackBerry that had seen better days. My mother kissed my cheek before leaving for the store. Once she was gone I pulled my backpack to the coffee table in front of the couch and sat cross legged on the floor. I pulled out my textbook and began on my mountain of homework.

After a while I heard the familiar sound of my dad's car doors locking before the door opened. I turned to see him in his regular black trench coat, hat, and scarf, as he carried his full briefcase. He took the things off and laid them over the coat rack before walking towards Alec and I.

“Good afternoon” He said with his slight British accent apparent.

He kissed the tops of our heads before disappearing into his office, closing the door behind him with a bang. I took a deep breath before standing up, walking to his office door, and knocking softly.

“Come in” He said just loud enough for me to hear.

I did as told and opened the door to see a dark room. The only light came from the now open window. The door closed behind me making me jump as I made my way over to the chairs in front of his large dark wooden desk.

“Yes Nikki?” He asked glancing up from his work.

“Um, I was wondering, um, if I could,um-“

“Spit it out Nikki! I have work that needs to be done” He snapped cutting me off.

“Can I go to work with you tomorrow?” I spit out a little louder than planned.

Silence filled the air. He sighed before speaking.

“Nikki, you already know the answer, we do this every year” He sighed going back to his work.

“I know but I was hoping since I'm older maybe I could come. I'm the only teenager who doesn't know what her dad does for a living” I protested.

“Look, all you need to know is that my job pays the bills, we're-“

“Yeah, yeah, you're very busy, I know” I cut him off.

Silence again was in the air. He sighed and opened a drawer in his desk.

“How about you and your friends go shopping tomorrow after school, you can take my card?” He offered as he grabbed his credit card out of his desk.

“Sure” I shrugged, he does this every year.

“Buy whatever you want, just have fun” He said as I took the card from him.

“Thanks” I said standing up.

I walked out of his office and sat back down on the couch. Alec just looked at me before hitting his Flash action figure against the floor.
