In the morning the body was removed and sent back to America. The soldiers were quiet that day. No one talked to Rufioh really, they were too afraid to upset him. He was the youngest there after all. With his new job assigned Rufioh would go out and look for anyone who was passing by. For a few weeks no one came by. Into December people started coming more and more. They would ask for food or medical attention and then be on their way no one really stayed for long, but Rufioh would always do something odd when he was helping. He would ask for everyone's name. Some gave their full name, others just gave their first. Rufioh would write them down in a journal he had brought with him. The first name on the list of everyone was Adam Knight.
In late January Rufioh, and ten others, were out looking for anyone. They hadn't had anyone come by in a while, so they guessed most had been captured or couldn't leave. That is until they heard German shoutinf, followed by English.
"HELP!" A boy about the same age as Rufioh was running towards them in a frantic hurry. "Please help!!"
"Woah! Woah what's wrong??" Rufioh asked, trying to calm down the person. "What's happened??"
"My friend's been shot! His brother is sick! People are chasing us! Please help!!" His English was covered in his thick German accent.
"Okay, okay! Show us where your friend is!" Rufioh and all of the other soldiers followed the kid to where the others were. One of the other teenagers had been shot, there were also two kids with him. "Jones, pick up the kid. Me and Anderson got the other." Rufioh instructed, helping pick up the other teenager.
Jones picked up the small crying child. He was obviously very sick with something, not liking being picked up. The kid started screaming and crying, wanting to get free. Jones tried to calm him down while the other soldiers held back the Germans. The first person that ran up to Rufioh said something to the kid and he stopped, then he picked up the other kid and everyone ran back to the base. To their luck they weren't followed.
Rufioh and the other soldier took the person they were holding to the medical tent where he was operated on along with another soldier who was shot. Jones gave the kid to Rufioh. "You're in charge of people who come in here! You take him!" Jones yelled, walking off to see where everyone else was.
"W-fine!" Rufioh took the child into the medical tent as well, he wanted to get him some medicine. He placed the kid on an exam table, he started crying and throwing a tantrum.
The first person came into the tent and saw the child that was screaming. He looked over at Rufioh.
"We don't know what we did! He just started yelling! We're trying to help him!" Rufioh tried explaining, he couldn't get the kid to do anything.
The teen started talking to the kid, who was crying and hyperventilating. He looked at the teen and started coughing up blood.
"We need to help him!!" Rufioh got worried and tried helping the child again, who just yelled at him in a different language. "Let us help you!"
Rufioh was getting annoyed not being able to understand. "Please translate! We're getting no where!""Okay." The person nodded and turned to the child. "Karkat, sie versuchen, ihnen zu helfen. Bitte, lassen Sie sie" (Karkat, they're trying to help you. please, let them)
"Nein! Nicht, bis ich Kankri sehen kann! wo ist er?!" The kid yelled back.
"No, not until he sees his brother. He does know where he is." The person translated.
"Your brother passed out from blood loss! He's being treated right now, you can see him in the morning. Okay?"
"Kankri ist wegen des Blutverlust ohnmächtig geworden! Er wird gerade behandelt. Du kannst Morgen zu ihm. Okay?" The teen tried to get the kid to understand, but he wouldn't.
"Was werden sie mit ihm machen ?? Was wollen sie von mir?" The kid was still hyperventilating and looking around the room as he spoke.
"What are you doing to him, what are you going to do to me?" The teen translated.
"You're going to be fine. We're going to give you some medicine and lots of water. You'll get lots of rest and we won't let you get hurt. Your brother is safe. They're stitching him up and letting him rest and regain his blood. He'll be awake in the morning."
"Es wird alles wider gut. Wir werden dir etwas Medizin geben und viel zu trinken. Du musst dich ausruhen und wir passen auf dich auf, so dass dir nichts passiert. Kankri ist sicher. Die Ärzte nähen die Wunde zusammen und lassen ihn ruhen damit sein Blut wiedergewinnen kann. Er wird am Morgen wach sein"
The kid nodded and looked up at Rufioh. "...okay..." He said meekly. A sigh of relief washed over the soldier as the child was being helped. "Er muss bleiben!!" He pointed at the other person.
"I stay." The teen nodded. "That is fine with me. It will keep him calm."
The Rufioh and gave the kid medicine and water. He told him to do a few things, which the teen translated. The child didn't feel as scared anymore, but he still didn't like not being able to understand anyone talking to him.
The child finally fell asleep with the teen who stayed with him. Rufioh felt relieved, he'd come and check on them in the morning when everyone was awake.
