Dear No One,
“Charlie!” a hushed whisper was heard across the room. “Charlie please be awake,” another whimper was heard followed by a little sniffle.
“Hmm?” I asked still half asleep but managing to lift my eyelids the slightest to see who was calling for me but the room was too dark to see anything.
“Can I come up and sleep with you Charlie? Please? I’m scared,” the same quiet voice was heard and realization struck that it was Nick. I sighed but told him to be careful and climb up quietly, which was almost impossible on this old, creaky, metal bunk bed. I soon felt the 7 year old boy softly lay beside me and I was quick to wrap my arms around him, cradling him to my chest.
It had only been maybe 2 minutes since Nick had crawled up here when I heard the shaky metal bunk moving again. “Any more room up here?” another whisper was heard followed by someone crawling along the small mattress trying to dodge all the limbs sprawled out across it.
The body laid beside Nick facing me letting the small light of the outside world creep through the curtains and land on just his face making his blue eyes shine just the slightest bit.
“Nolan!” Nick smiled turned to cuddle into him but still held my hand so my arm was now draped over the side of him. Nolan chuckled and kissed the top of Nick’s head and ruffled his blonde curly hair. I just smiled at the two of them then closed my eyes when Nick piped up again, “Charlie will you sing that song?”
I looked over at Nolan who had his eyes closed but a grin was evident on his lips letting me know he was awake. I then looked at Nick and he had the most innocent smile on his face so once again I sighed and slowly nodded my head and began humming.
