Edward listened in silence as I told him everything. When I finished he stayed silent. He didn't shout, didn't jump up and pummel Raven, didn't even look angry, instead he looked thoughtful. This didn't seem like the strict Edward I'd been training with for the last week.
Finally, Edward spoke, "The Midnight Star, eh? So you're who everyone is talking about."
"That's very likely," Raven said hesitantly. "I haven't left the forest, or even come this way, since I got here."
"When did you get here?" Edward asked.
Yes! I thought. Answer the question you ignored the first time!
"A year ago," Raven looked down. "My ship was captured and the people who caught me thought this place was deserted." He smiled slightly. "I guess I shouldn't believe what other people say."
"And you didn't have a name before coming here?" I asked. "Surely people must have called you something."
"People would either call me The Midnight Star or The Robed Man," Raven said. "And the crew would call me Captain."
"Any other important bits of knowledge you should be sharing with us?" Edward asked.
Raven hesitated. "There were two members of my crew that took on names like mine as a joke. The Midmorning Star and The Midafternoon Star. They... they were both killed in the fight for my ship."
Edward hesitated. "What were their real names? And what was your ship called?"
"They were James and Iqua, and my ship was The Royal Phoenix."
Edward looked surprised. "Not James Kidd and Iqua Wave?"
"Yes, them," Raven frowned. "Why?"
"Because both of them arrived in port this morning," Edward said. "Aboard The Royal Phoenix."
Raven stood up. "Where are they now? Those two have a good deal of explaining to do."
"Don't get your rigging all up in a knot," an unfamiliar voice said. "We're fine. Still recovering from some sever wounds, but otherwise we're fine."
I looked over and saw two people standing in the doorway. One had dark purple robes, blonde hair, and green eyes, and the other had gold robes, brown hair tied in a handkerchief, and brown eyes. It was clear that the purple robed woman had spoken first.
"Iqua!" Raven stood up and walked quickly over to the two. "James! I thought I saw both of you die!"
"Let me tell you that I'm just as surprised to see you, young captain, as you are to see us," the man with the gold robes said. "We were lucky they were dumb enough to not sink The Royal Phoenix."
"I think you should tell us everything that's happened to you lad," Edward said, giving the gold robed man a pointed look. "It seems a lot has happened to you since you led me to Tullum. I'd like to know what I've missed."
"Alright then Edward," the man Edward had called James came in and looked at me. "Mind if I sit down here, lass?"
I paused before reluctantly moving my feet of the armrest and onto the floor. I wasn't sure what I thought of having someone I didn't know sit next to me.
"Are you the apprentice Edward told us about?" James asked quietly as Iqua told Edward everything that had happened.
"I don't know what Edward told you, but I'm going to say yes anyway," I started to reach up to rub at my necklace, but remembered that I'd dropped it into the Thames.
"Ah," James smiled. "What do you say about finding you a necklace? It seems you used to have one."
"I did used to have one," I looked away. "It was..." Did I dare tell him? I didn't see why not. Even though I knew it was the symbol of the assassins enemy. "It was a red cross."
James looked surprised. "A Templar cross? Why are you here then?" He looked a little suspicious.
"My father was a Templar. He always wanted me to become a Templar, but I never followed his instructions. I met Edward in the shadows when I was running from my fathers search party." I smiled slightly at the memory. "He tried to knock me out when we were inside a house."
James smiled, he seemed to have relaxed a bit. "If Edward will let the two of us leave, perhaps I could show you a couple of tricks for creating your own special symbol."
James stood up and smirked at me. "Coming apprentice?"
"And where might you two be going?" Edward asked as we headed for the door.
"We're going to make your apprentice into a true assassin."
Edward leaned back and smiled. "In that case, don't let me bother you."
I followed James out of the manor and through the town. He led me down a different path than the one I'd followed Edward to.
James stopped in a clearing with a large tree in the center. There was a large house built half way up the tree. There were supports holding it up. It was built of sun-bleached boards and logs, the roof was made of smaller sticks and reeds.
"That's where we're headed," James pointed at the house. "See you up there."
I ran up the side of the tree and grabbed hold of one of the supports. I reached up and back, taking hold of the edge of the platform around the house and pulled myself up. I stood in front of the door when James landed at my side.
"How'd you get here so fast?" he asked. "I only made one way up."
I gave him an odd look. "I just ran up the tree. I used that support to get up here."
"You can't have," James looked down. "That's too far, even for The Midnight Star, even he couldn't make it that far up." He turned to me. "Are you like him?"
"N-" I interrupted myself. "Yes, I think so. Can you tell me about it? I hardly know anything."
"I believe that can be arranged," James undid his bandanna, and his, no her, hair dropped down to her shoulders. "Now, we need to get that necklace going. We have much to talk about."
