The man carrying me threw me into a cell in the brig. It was very clearly a newly added one and appeared to be made of pure steel. Most likely the only thing I couldn't bend.
I made sure my eyes stayed mostly closed until the man left. I sat up and yanked my hands apart, the rope made a cracking sound when it broke. I winced, hoping nobody had heard. I studied the bars around me. They were about a foot and a half apart.
"Don't tell me they were that stupid," I murmured, touching two of the bars and poking my head through. "They were that stupid. This is too easy."
I looked around. I was the only one in the brig. There wasn't even a guard. I stepped out between the bars and started hunting for my swords. They were both sitting on a table along with my belt of throwing knives and hidden blades.
I took all of my weapons and turned to the trapdoor. I placed my hands flat on the door and pushed. Something rattled on the other side. I frowned and pushed again. There was a rattle, but otherwise, nothing happened. They must have locked it from the other side.
I looked around for anything I could use to pry it open. The only things I could see were two crates, both empty, and the table my weapons had been sitting on. There was also the cell I had been in, but that wouldn't be any help.
I could feel the ship moving and knew that I didn't have much time before the swim was too far. I paced the length of the ship four times before I thought of anything.
The base of a ship was usually the strongest, but it was always submerged, making it the easiest to cut through... theoretically. I took one of the throwing knives out of my belt and started carving a hole in the back of the ship. I checked several times that the spot would be above the level of the ocean.
After longer than I would have liked, I had a hole as wide as my shoulders, but not high enough. I started working faster.
When the hole was finally big enough, I looked out. There were a large number of islands surrounding the ship I was in. I couldn't tell which one was Great Inagua. I sighed and leaned a little further out.
Spray from the waves splashed up in my face. I looked toward the horizon and saw a familiar, red sailed ship far in the distance. A small black square flapped at the top of the highest mast.
I was a good swimmer, but I wasn't sure I could get that far.
There was a creak from behind me. I looked over my shoulder and saw two sleek black boots on the ladder. Time to leave.
I took a deep breath and dove into the water. Swimming underneath the surface. Something splashed into the ocean less than three feet away from me. I twisted away and blew out most of my air in surprise. A fire barrel. Great.
I forced myself to not go up right away. I only lasted a few seconds before I kicked up to the surface. I gasped and pushed my hair out of my eyes.
I looked up at the ship I had just left. A large number of people were looking down at me. I turned my gaze back to the Jackdaw and started swimming.
There were shouts from the ship as it slowly started to turn around. I kept my eyes glued to the Jackdaw's figurehead, or what I guessed was the figurehead.
The ship was now fully turned around and was coming at me. It was moving slowly. I looked up at the curved prow, carved with large vines and leaves. It wasn't about to go around me, they just wanted me to get out of the way.
I smiled and reached a hand up as the ship got closer. My plan was simple, and I would die if I didn't pull it off.
I grabbed the lowest carving and held on with all my strength. The water pulled me under the ship, but I held on tightly, grabbing it with my other hand and pulling myself out of the water.
I coughed, trying to keep quiet so they wouldn't know I was there. The Jackdaw was growing steadily larger.
I spit out another mouthful of salty water and looked ahead. The ship that was so kindly giving me a ride, started to turn to avoid running into the Jackdaw.
I pushed off the prow, hard, and landed in the water seven feet away. I dove under and swam to the shadow of the Jackdaw's hull. I ran my fingers along the dark wood as I swam to the surface and took hold of the ladder on the side.
I heaved my self out of the water. My wet robes poured water and tried to pull me down as I climbed onto the deck. I collapsed, panting from the effort and stared up at the red sails.
"Rook!"
I turned my head to see Raven running toward me. Edward walked down the stairs from the wheel. They both looked worried, Edward was just hiding it better. Adé was close behind.
"I woke up in the clearing and Edward was stuck in a net!" Raven knelt down next to me. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," I rolled onto my belly. My swords scraped as I pushed myself up onto my knees. "Just cold and wet. Where's James and Iqua?"
"They both left after you and Edward ran off," Raven said. "They said they were going to Tullum."
Edward stopped next to Raven and Adé stopped behind him. "Good to see you again Rookie," Edward said, smiling. "How did you get onto the prow of their ship?"
I glanced to the right and saw that the ship I'd been on before had seen where I was. "I think we have other things to worry about at the moment."
Edward turned to look and smiled, a devilish look in his eyes. "Man the cannons! Take that frigate!"
