When Sam woke up he found Lucy sat next to him drinking from her bottle of water. She seemed to have her mind on other things, but unlike yesterday she didn't seem worried or scared, more at peace. Like Sam, Lucy had a knack for slipping off into her own little world. She looked calm and happy sitting there in her daydream, it was nice to watch. For the first time in a while Lucy looked like she was at peace with herself.
Sam knew she'd had a rough time at home. Her father was staying at work longer, or at least that is what he had told Lucy and her mother. But as it was coming closer to Christmas Lucy found her mother was out the house more often as well. Mrs Felton often went on business trips near this time of year as many places needed more solicitors to deal with the rising crime rate the season brought. Lucy hated being alone in her house, but as she grew older she found it occurring more and more often.
But Lucy never stayed at home and if she did she asked Sam to come over and keep her company. Sam loved going to Lucy's, it was a big house, with no one inside it except him and his best friends. There were no siblings or parents and there was always food. The worst part of going was always when I'd have to leave. Lucy hated being a lone at night, not just because she was alone but because she had time to think. Sam knew this better than anyone as he could hear her thoughts a mile off.
But right now Sam could feel her thoughts were happy, he couldn't decipher what she was thinking about exactly but he didn't care, so long as she was happy. So Sam stayed lay down as to not call her out of her dreams. Sam stayed there for a few minutes before deciding he couldn't stay there all day and sat up.
Lucy seemed a bit shocked when he tapped her on the shoulder, like she didn't even notice him sit up. But even when she came over her shock her smile didn't fade, it was like all the worries she'd had over the past few days were now miraculously gone. She looked fresh and awake, like she had slept well, which was impossible as she had slept on the same lumpy ground as Sam had and if anyone was capable of getting a good nights sleep there Sam would have been very surprised.
"Okay, so I've been out and had a look around. I found a few sign posts, and well, I've been thinking. As we have nothing better to, why don't we go to the beach?" A smile spread across her face as she already knew Sam's answer.
Both Sam and Lucy loved the beach, for different reasons. After a forest, the beach was their favourite place to go. Sam enjoyed the beach as it was a huge open space that looked over an even bigger open space. Sam always admired the ocean, it had vast power and uncontrollable strength. It covered so much of the Earth's surface and so much of it has gone undiscovered. It was so natural and so great Sam always felt drawn to it.
Lucy loved the beach due to its array of natural life. Everywhere she turned there would be something living and breathing, crabs in rock pools, fish in sea and seagulls in the sky. It was like the entire scene was breathing in time and she found it fascinating. Lucy could sit for hours in a zoo or on a beach or in a forest, they were all filled with animals. She liked animals a lot and enjoyed being around them, they made her feel wanted and she always liked talking to them, despite the fact they couldn't talk back.
Sam couldn't not go to the beach when he had nothing better to do. "Okay then, let's go." And with that they both got up and got dressed. It must have been early morning as the motorway was quiet. But by the time they had packed up the tent it started to get busier. It didn't take long to get to the beach as they had more energy than they had yesterday.
The salty air hit them before the sound did. Sam loved the feel of the beach, it was so windy and always smelt like salt. The sand was so soft and dry that Lucy took her shoes off. They both headed off to the rock pools and they liked it there. Sam was close to the sea and Lucy was surrounded by sea creatures. They sat down and after a while they realized how cold it was, they had forgotten that it was September, the cool air wiped at their faces and tugged at Lucy's hair.
