When Sam got to Lucy's house she also had a backpack on. Her duffel bag was on the floor at her feet. The bag on her bag was full of food and pans and two blankets. Lucy was just locking the door, after that she looked at her key and then opened the letter box to push her key through.

"You might want to do that." Sam warned Lucy, he remembered what his dad had said, "So if you ever need to come back you can get in." he felt like the advise would also help his friend in her moment of confusion. Lucy looked up at Sam and after a moment she closed the letter box and put her key back in her pocket. Sam thought she had heard him remembering his dad's advise and then chose to follow it, but it would be better if he didn't ask.

Lucy grabbed Sam's hand and looked into his eyes. She was ready to go, go away from the house, away from her family and far far away from this life. Sam tightened his grip on Lucy's hand and a look of trust passed between the two. Then with a final look down the road they headed off in the direction of town. If they got there then they could walk to the motorway and once there they could pick a place to go.

They got five roads away before they started talking to each other. They were both so shocked by what they were doing. Neither knew what to say or what to talk about. But they couldn't just walk in silence everywhere. Sam pondered what subject to bring up and then he decided. It would be easiest to bring up an obvious topic.

"So Lucy,  Where are we going?" He looked at his friend, her eyes were fixed on the road ahead. Her hand was still entwined with Sam's, her palms were warm and slightly sweaty, but it didn't bother Sam, he knew that holding her hand helped her feel safe. She was worried about what they had gotten into, Sam could tell. He didn't know how to comfort her so he decided not to try. He knew his question had only made her worry more, probably due to her not having an answer. He decided to change his question to one which wouldn't worry her as much.

"I mean..err...what did your dad have to say?" Lucy seemed less bothered by this question and appeared more likely to answer.

"Oh, only that he still loves me and my mum but that the relationship has fallen apart in the past few months. He apologized for not being there for me. It was like he knew I wouldn't stay after finding out. He told me to look after myself. To be honest it sounded like soon he would be leaving too."

Lucy's eyes now looked sad and hurt. Sam knew Lucy missed not having her dad around. Now she was the one leaving her family. However, it didn't really matter to Lucy about leaving, it was a daunting prospect to be out in the world with only Sam by her side. Sam was her best friend and with him she felt like she could do anything but this seemed even to big for them. The world was a big place and Lucy and Sam weren't even fifteen yet. This was an awfully big adventure.

"Oh and also, I don't know where we're going yet. Sorry, but when we get to the motorway we can decide from there." Lucy could't think of anything else to say to Sam, the truth was she didn't know where they were going either. She wanted to promise Sam they were going to somewhere nice or just reassure him him that she had some sense of direction. But she couldn't, they could end up anywhere, and unfortunately Lucy knew that.

"It's okay Lucy, we'll be okay. My dad was right, you're the one with your head on straight." Lucy managed a small smile which made Sam smile too. Lucy's smile calmed Sam to a state where he was able to concentrate on what was going on. He was heading down a small street, about half a mile from town. Lucy also seemed to have calmed down, her hands were cooler and her eyes seemed less strained. Sam was proud of himself for helping Lucy to feel better. Sam never liked seeing Lucy upset and not knowing how to help. But he usually didn't need to so much, Lucy was made calmer just by having her friend next to her.
