Meg Giry

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Repeat!" My mother instructed me and the rest of the dancers. I gracefully twirled into the arms of my partner dancer, Charles. He smiled at me, but I was too focused on the dance. Once we finished, he started talking to me.

"Excuse me, Meg, do you think it'd be possible for me to take you out to dinner tonight?" Charles asked, a dark tone of red appearing on his cheeks.

"I'm not free tonight. Really, I'm not. I'll be with Raoul tonight, and I have to keep practicing-"

"We could practice together."

"No, that won't do. Another night, Charles. Please excuse me."

Christine Destler

"Mother, can I go see father?" Gustave pulled on my coat, trying to get my attention. I sighed and turned to face him.

"In a minute, Gustave. I have to find the stage manager, and then the musical director." I turned my attention to a short and petite Blonde girl. "Excuse me, miss, do you mind?"

She turned to face me. Her face was familiar, but I couldn't place it. She gasped, walking towards me. "Heaven help me, could it be? No, it couldn't possibly! It's only been a few months!"

I was confused. "Sorry, do I-"

"Yes, I think you do!" I took a step closer to her.

"Have we-"

"Go on. Take a guess!" She pushed a strand of blonde hair behind her ear, and suddenly, I knew exactly who she was.

"Wait, it can't be. Is it-"

"Yes!" She squealed.

"Oh my gosh. I can't believe it's you!" I squealed with her, and she hugged my body tightly.

She pulled back, taking a look at me. "After a few months, you look like this! Look at you Christine, regal as a queen and beautiful!"

"Meg, and you as well! I could hardly tell it's you!" I smiled squeezing her hand.

"How have you been?" She asked.

"Great. It was a long journey home. I'm really more concerned about you."

Meg froze. "Why on earth would you be concerned about me?"

"I know about the drinking, Meg. Why did you keep this from me?" It was then that my always cheerful best friend started to break down. I hugged her tightly, crying with her.

"I-I'm so- so sorry! I- I didn't know who to t-turn to," she sobbed. "I was s-so lost."

"I'm always here. Always. Never forget that, Megan." I held her hand tightly and she nodded. I looked down to notice a beautiful, simple ring on her left hand. She realized I was looking at it.

"Right. I was getting to that. It sort of just happened. Raoul was so sweet about it. He took me out to dinner, we danced for hours. He's really such a gentleman," she rambled, excitement bright in her eyes.

"He really is. Congratulations!"

"Would you be my maid of honor?" She asked seriously.

"Megan...of course I would. I'd be delighted," I smiled.

"Thank you so much. By the way, it looks like I'm not the only one with special plans!" I was confused by her statement.

"What?"

"You don't know?" Her brows furrowed together.

"I haven't a clue what you're talking about."

"Christine, you're glowing. You're most obviously pregnant," she laughed, acting as if it wasn't a surprise.

"I'm...what? It could be possible, but..Oh. Oh! Oh, it all makes sense. It really does. Oh, I really must tell Erik. What is he to say?" I looked around for Gustave, but he was nowhere to be found. "If you'll excuse me, I must find Gustave. No doubt he ran off." Meg nodded understandingly and walked off.

I quickly ran into my dressing room and pushed the mirror open, closing it behind me. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, calling out Gustave's name. I ran through the lake, the water going a little bit over my waist. As I scrambled on to shore, I could hear Gustave singing. I stomped into the music room. Erik immediately stopped playing the piano.

"Gustave Destler, have you utterly lost your mind?! You could've been hurt! You know you mustn't find your way down here alone!" Anger builded inside of me. Erik stood.

"Christine, calm down. Gustave meant no harm." Erik took a few steps toward me.

"Do not tell me what to say, Erik! He's my son too! He could have been hurt, or lost, or even killed and you know that! Stop pretending as if this isn't a big deal because it is! I can't believe you!" I raged on. Gustave ran out of the room. I sighed, calming down.

"Gustave!" Erik called after him.

"I've frightened him. What is the matter with me? I'm turning into a wench!" I sat down, hiding my face in my hands, too ashamed to face Erik.

"You were concerned about him. You are doing exactly what a mother should be doing. He needs a little discipline in his life." Erik pulled my hands from my face, holding them in his. He smiled my favorite I-love-you smile, and I felt calmer.

"I should go find him." I stood up, walking out of the music room. I assumed he would be hiding where he always did: in the bedroom closet. Of course, I was right.

"Mama, I'm sorry!" Gustave wailed, throwing his little arms around my neck. I laughed half-heartedly and held him in my arms.

"Hush, it's alright, darling. I am having a hard day. Forgive me." I brushed his hair off his face.

"You are forgiven." He smiled and ran off. I stood, sighing, and sat on the bed. Erik walked in.

"What's wrong?" He asked, sitting next to me on the bed.

"I just feel...drained." Erik pulled me into his arms, sitting me on his lap.

"You look rather- how do I put it?- glowing?" I supposed it was time to tell him.

"Erik, I think I'm pregnant." He took a long look at me, then smiled his bright smile.

"I think you are as well! I knew there was something. I could tell, I think! Oh, this is wonderful!" He kissed my forehead. I was surprised by how happy he was.

"I didn't think you'd be so happy about this," I admitted. He cupped my face in his hands.

"Christine, you have given me a family. I could never be upset with you."

"I love you."

               "As I love you."
