It was getting late. Really late. Kazumi had waited at home for Kaito, passing the time by reading. When she realised that Kaito had been gone for five hours, she began to worry.
She tried not to worry. Obviously he had friends which he might see after school. But knowing what she was like, and knowing that she was always on alert just in the Magpies came along, he would have the right mind to call her and let her know that he was alright. But no. There was no call. There was... nothing.
After the five hour mark, she sat in and rang him. It went to his voice mail after a dozen rings. After trying a few more times, there was still nothing.
Not liking the feeling that something bad had happened to him, Kazumi was out the door retracing her steps to Teitan High School, hoping that he was still there. Finding that some of the teachers were still checking students' homework, it was open. Sneaking past all of the classrooms with teachers in, she made it to their classroom.
Her hope died when she saw that he wasn't there, and his desk was empty. No books. No satchel.
Walking through the desks in the classroom, she reached his desk and placed her hand on his seat only to find it chillingly cold. "He's been gone a long time then." She thought to herself, trying to think of where he could be.
She plucked up the courage to ask some of the teachers who had stayed behind if they had seen her brother. Unfortunately, they all said that they hadn't seen him since he left an hour and a half after the end of school. Kazumi thanked them before leaving the building.
Kazumi tried to think of people who Kaito might be with. Maybe he was somewhere sorting out his heist for tomorrow night. Nah, that couldn't be it. He would have to come home anyway for that. She could try Jii-chan, but his bar would have been closed due to how late it was.
Well it didn't hurt to try.
Making her way up the stairs to Jii's bar, she tried to open the door only to find it locked. Sighing with irritation, she decided to go home.
She couldn't call anyone, due to them not knowing about the Magpies wanting Kaito. She could try Shinichi, but then she would get him worried.
After a while of thought, she finally decided that the best person to call would be Shinichi as she could just say that he hasn't come home. He knew about the Magpies a little, and that she was held captive by them for fourteen years but other than that, he had to be left in the dark to hide both hers and Kaito's secrets.
Retrieving her phone, she scrolled through the contacts to find Shinichi. Finding his number, she pressed the dial button and then placed it to her ear. After a few rings, the detective answered.
"Hello." Spoke Shinichi on the other end.
"Hello Shinichi, it's Kazumi." She notified.
"Ah, Kazumi hey. What's up? Is Kaito being a bit much?" He asked her, knowing exactly what his cousin was like. He was even surprised that he had managed to stay sane after growing up with him all his life.
"No, it's nothing like that. It's just that I'm worried about Kaito." She replied, trying to contain her worry.
"Why? What's wrong? Is he okay?" He asked, concern filling his tone.
"That's the thing, I don't know if he's okay because he hasn't come home yet."
"He hasn't come home yet? When did you last see him?" Shinichi tried his best to stay out of detective mode, staying strong for Kazumi.
"The last time I saw him was when we were leaving school, and he said he had some work to catch up on. He said that I could go home and that he would see me later, but that was the last time I saw him." She released a shaky breath. "I wish I never left."
