Steve's POV

Steve,
I'm sorry but I have to go. I've found information about my past that I need to go find answers to. Please don't try to find me I want to do this on my own. Once I've found what I needed I promise I'll come back to you.
Love,
Adeline

I set the crumbled piece of paper back on the counter while sighing. I had read it so many times I had memorized it. Adeline had left more than two years ago, after three months Shield tried to follow her even though she had said she didn't want anyone to find her. Addie had made it pretty clear since there was no trace of her anywhere. I stayed in my apartment alone waiting for the day for her to come back but she never did. The rest of the Avengers had all been distant since the Battle of New York, I'd see Natasha every once in a great while but the rest them were off in their own world but mine was gone. I got up from the counter and headed out the door to go for my morning run where I met Sam Wilson.

"Need a medic?" I asked walking over to him as he leant against a tree out of breath after I'd passed him multiple times.

"I need a new set of lungs. Dude, you just ran like thirteen miles in thirty minutes," he laughed still breathing heavily.

"I guess I got a late start," I shrugged answering sarcastically. We went on talking about the army when I got a text from Natasha.

Mission alert. Extraction imminent. Meet at the curb. :)

"Alright, Sam, duty calls. Thanks for the run. If that's what you wanna call running," I smirked shaking his hand.

"Oh that's how it is?" He raised his eyebrows and crossing his arms.

"That's how it is," I confirmed.

"Okay. Any time you wanna stop by the VA, make me look awesome in front of the girl at the front desk, just let me know," Sam laughed.

"I'll keep it in mind," I answered nodding.

Natasha pulled up in her car next to the curb rolling her window down.

"Hey, fellas. Either one of you know where the Smithsonian is? I'm here to pick up a fossil," Nat joked.

"It's hilarious," I said sarcastically as I walked towards her car and got in.

"How you doing?" Sam asked her.

"Hey," she smiled.

"You can't run everywhere," I shrugged while grinning.

"No you can't," he laughed before we pulled away.

Nat filled me in our mission which was to take back a Shield ship that had been overtaken by a group of pirates with hostages.

"Secure channel seven," I told Natasha.

"Channel seven secure," she said as we flew towards where the ship was on the radar. There was an awkward silence, "So you do anything Saturday night?" She asked.

"Well, all the guys from my barbershop quartet are dead, so..." I trailed off "And my girlfriend  has been MIA for two years now so no, not really."

"Coming up by the drop zone, Cap," the pilot said.

"I really think she doesn't want to be found. You should just give up besides you know, if you ask Kristen out, from Statistics, she'll probably say yes," Nat raised her eyebrows.

"Secure the engine room, then find me a date," I ordered.

"I'm multitasking," she grinned.

After taking down most of the pirates, Batroc threw me into a window as the glass shattered around me I found Natasha downloading something on the computer.

"Well, this is awkward," Nat glanced up at me.

"What are you doing?" I asked surprised that she was in here.

"Backing up the hard drive," she answered, "It's a good habit to get into."

I walked over beside her, "Rumlow needed your help. What the hell are you doing here?" I looked at the screen, "You're saving Shield Intel."

"Whatever I can get my hands on," she answered not taking her eyes off the screen.

"Our mission was to rescue hostages," I said sternly.

"No, that was your mission," Nat said pulling out the hard drive, "And you've done it beautifully."

She tried to leave and I grabbed her arm, "You just jeopardized this whole operation."

"I think that's overstating things," Natasha rolled her eyes as one of the windows broke and a grenade was thrown in.

I deflected it with my shield grabbing Nat and diving into the next room.

"Okay, that one was on me," she nodded as we got up.

"Damn right," I said as we turned to see a huge blue glowing light in the observation room over.

"What's that?" She asked.

We opened the door and I could see it was a huge tank filled with water and a girl floating in the middle with tubes connected to herself.

"What the..." Nat said before we both realized and my throat hitched.

"Adeline."
