Twenty Eight Years Later

Luke got out of prison two years earlier than planned for good behaviour. He was fifty two now and he was finally going home.

Luke said goodbye to the few friends he'd made in that place before he left with his bag, which contained photographs and drawings he'd gotten over the years from his kids and grandkids. He walked out the door and in to the foyer and he was instantly wrapped in a hug from Michael and Calum. Luke dropped his bag and hugged them both tightly, kissing their heads. "I missed you so much." Luke breathed.

"You're home." Calum sobbed, "You're coming home."

Luke peppered them in kisses before Michael picked up Luke's bag, "Let's go home."

"Can we go somewhere else first?" Luke asked. "I-I want to see Ashton."

"Luke..." Calum trailed off but Luke shook his head.

"I want to go."

They left and went to a shop, Michael paid for some flowers because Luke didn't physically have money on him, he had none at all. Then they went to the cemetery and the two showed Luke the way to Ashton's grave.

The two hung back as Luke approached the head stone and they watched him bend down and put the flowers in the pot after taking out the old withered ones. He cleaned up the dead leaves around the grave before he sat down.

Luke stared at the stone which said:

Ashton Fletcher Irwin
Father, Husband, Son.

Luke sighed, "I'm sorry." He said softly, before he reached forward and touched the headstone. "I didn't mean it, please know that." He said hushly, "I didn't mean to hurt you, if you would've just come home five minutes later you'd be alive and well."

Luke sighed and wiped his eyes, "I love you Ashton, I never once stopped thinking about you." His eyes flickered across the writing again. "I don't remember the day I met you, but mum says we were two and she just set me next to you and we instantly started playing together and then in school when I was like twelve, I started having feelings for you. I told you and you said you felt the same but we didn't do anything about them. Then we went to high school and met Mike and Cal and yeah, you know the rest. But sometimes I go back to those days and it blows my mind how different things could've been."

Luke stayed sitting for a few more moments before he sighed and stood up, "I probably won't come back to see you, because I don't think I deserve to."

Luke walked away from the headstone and back to Michael and Calum.

They drove back to the old house, the one they'd brought before Carson was born. As soon as Luke got in to the living room, his family yelled surprise and Luke couldn't help but smile.

Carson stood by the fireplace, his daughter in his arms and his wife by his side, his son at his feet. He was thirty two now, with his own family.

Madi had her girlfriend, Olive by her side, smiling brightly. She was twenty eight now.

Then there was Lucy who had her boyfriend with her, and their baby girl in her arms. She was twenty six.

Luke's three children all moved to hug their dad at the same time and Luke grinned, wrapping his arms around them. "God I missed you all so much." Luke sighed, kissing his daughters heads before hugging Carson. "You look so much like Calum now."
