TWO WEEKS LATER:
When I woke up in the morning, Chase was at the bedside. Somehow, so was Gabby. They smiled at me once I woke, and I did the same. Gabby reached out for me and I sat up and held her. Chase cocked his head at me with a smile, as I pulled Gabby's hair into a ponytail.
"So what happened that night?" Chase asked quietly.
"I felt nauseous and exhausted. It was weird, y'know?"
He nodded, and Gabby put her hands on her knees, staring at the bed. I held her close, but she didn't laugh or smile. Instantly, I knew something was wrong. I turned her around and she looked at me. Something scared her, and I had a feeling it had something to do Chase.Of course, it wasn't something he did on purpose. It made me anxious, as I turned my baby girl around to face me. She wouldn't look at me, she just, sat there, staring into nothing.
"Mija, what is it?" I said, taking her chin in my hands, and making her look at me.
Gabby shook her head, averting my eyes. I didn't like this.
"Did you do something to her? Did you scare her?" I asked instantly, making him look up.
Chase frowned at me, like I just called him monster or something. I returned the frown with a glare, the kind your mama gives you when you know you did something wrong.
"I got in a fight. So...?"
I sat up straight, my eyes wide as I stared at the ceiling.
"Well, you must've flipped, because my baby isn't talking."
Chase groaned and sunk into his seat.
"I left her at the park for a few hours.""A few hours?! What the fuck were you thinking?!"
"You wanted me to fight with her near me? You want 'Lenny' or whatever the FUCK you call that stupid thing, to come around our daughter?"
"Better Lenny than a fucking pedophile!" I said, covering her ears.
Gabby looked like she would cry at any second. That pissed me off even more, making me feel sick. My baby was probably scared, and cold, for how long. He should've dropped the fight and made sure she was safe, first. I was so mad,, I could explode.
"Don't be angry at ME! I didn't ask to have this curse! I did the best I could taking care of her. I only left her to protect her. Lenny don't know her, and you just got lucky the one time he didn't decide to tear you up!" Suddenly, his voice softened, cracking. "I ain't some giant teddy bear, Isa. I'm a fucking monster. As much as you say I'm not, I am. I don't like hurting people. I don't like not having control over my actions." He started to cry again, and I couldn't deal with it. "You think I asked to wake up in the middle of nowhere, every time my emotions overwhelm me? Or when the moon comes out? That I like having my baby scared of me? My girlfriend, who I plan to marry and take care of?!" He wiped his face, and covered it, turning around and tapping his foot.
Gabby slowly got off my lap, sliding off of the bed. She walked over to him and pulled his shirt, making him turn, looking down at her, his eyes red from crying.
"Don't cry, daddy." She said sweetly, making him break down.
I mean, he literally started sobbing, bending down and picking her up. He held her close, as his hand rested on her head, sniffing sadly. Gabby hugged him back, rubbing his back. Chase bit his lip, moving side to side a little as he held her.
"I'm so sorry, mija..." he whispered, his voice breaking. "I'm so so sorry..."
Now my eyes were watering, watching the two people who were important to me bond like that.
