losing you would make me lose it

I ran after her into the parking lot.

She was sitting on the curb, crying and hugging herself. My heart shattered into pieces.

"HELP HER. COMFORT HER." Alverno commanded.

But I couldn't.

If I even touched her, she'd probably shy away from me, or run, and hurt herself more, and...I couldn't do that to her. She meant too much to me, and the last thing I'd do is hurt her.

I turned to leave, and almost as soon as I got to the door, an excruciating pain shot up my back. It was like the pain of getting ready to shift, but it was 10 times worse. My bracelet began to screech, hurting my ears. Without control, I fell to my knees, eyes shut. I held the doorway as my muscles contorted, and my teeth pushed out from my gums. I looked over and saw that the metal on the doorway looked like shiny play-doh.

I thought she'd run away, but Kimberly came to me, and placed a hand on my shoulder, I almost crumpled even more. Her touch subsided the pain, and sent sparks shooting through my shoulder. I cried out, and she held me, making me look at her.

Kimberly stroked my face with one hand, and stared into my eyes. She looked so tired, and her eye was swollen shut. All the moon goddess left was her minor cuts, scrapes and bruises.

"Alan...your eyes are turning red."

"Kimberly...I can't feel-" I screamed as my back popped out of place.

I lost consciousness.

Alverno's POV

I felt the true strength of an Alpha surge in me. It was time to take on my form. I let myself start to change, holding her near me. I felt her start to quiver in my arms, so I loosened my grip on her.

I never got to come out. It was particularly rare that I did. I was just another animal, after all.

I saw her get up and move away from me. She's not going anywhere, let alone without me. Last time I let her out of our sights, she nearly died. I didn't know many human words, how to work a human body, or anything about human things, but I did know one that'd get attention.

"Mate!"

Kim POV:

I froze where I stood. First his eyes turned red, and then, he started wolfing out, while I was in his arms. I was ready to run, but I stopped when he growled at me, and barked, calling me his mate.

"What'd you just call me, boy?" I looked him in his eyes, as he rested on all fours, still shifting.

He grunted, and looked down, like he was contemplating something. Maybe he didn't understand me..?

"Alan." I said, walking over to him, and kneeling in front of him.

He had totally zoned out, as if the shifting pain was no longer existent. He stared into my eyes, growling in approval. I did not like this!!! It was totally weird. I waited for him and carefully took off his shirt. I managed to get his watch off too.

I stood back, as he let loose. This was terrifying. He threw back his head and howled, as he turned into a huge black wolf before my eyes. I blinked, and he stared up at me. Here he was.

The real alpha.

Something felt wrong about this. I watched as he neared me, and sniffed all over me, rubbing his head against my dirty jeans. I clutched his belongings I my hands, and put the bracelet on my wrist.

He nudged me, and I walked forward. Shaking his head, he stopped. He put his head between my legs, and suddenly, I was on his back. We were off. I held on tight, the bloody and sweaty shirt still in my hands.

---

He took me to my house, and I went inside. Alan stayed outside for a little while, before coming in, his eyes back to normal. He looked tired, like he'd cry at any minute. I ran to him, and hugged him, feeling him instantly wrap me in his arms.

"Kim, we have to go away from here." He whispered, setting me down and looking in my eyes.

"Huh?"

"My wolf is demanding fresh blood...and I don't want to kill anybody. But I want you. I can't be an alpha until my wolf is reborn."

I stood there, looking at him, and shaking my head, but it slowly turned into a nod. I took off his bracelet and gave it to him.

"I'm guessing this'll be useful." I whispered, before turning and leaving to go to my mom's room.

She was sitting on her bed, nightlight and glasses on, enjoying a good book. I couldn't do this. I really couldn't. She looked so peaceful. I didn't want her to think that I was leaving her because I wanted to leave her. I didn't know how to do it.

Carefully I opened the door, and poked my head in. She gasped and got up, taking my face in her hands.

"Little girl, what the hell happened to you?!" She shouted. "Oh my lord, oh Jesus..." she started crying and hugged me.

"Mama, I'm fine. I just...got in a fight. I didn't win, but Alan helped. I need to go with him for a while."

Her face hardened.
"Now, Kimberly-"

"Mom, I really need to help him with something. Can I get four weeks?"

"Four weeks?!" She yelled. "Your school-"

"I'm a senior. You can tell them any kind of lie. Please. Please!"

"I...can try. I want you to know that I'm letting you go, because I trust you. Both of you, and you're almost grown. Don't let me down. I love you. Be safe." She hugged me, and kissed my head.

Tears formed in my eyes, but I was quickly was snapped out of my moment by a thud downstairs and a crash.
"I'll pack my things, and be right back."

Running downstairs, I saw Alan bent over a broken case, cursing to himself. I put my hand on his back, and shook my head.

"Come with me." I told him, and he turned around, looking at me with the same red eyes from before.

He stood slowly, taking shaky steps, and I sighed and led him upstairs. My god, he was like Tarzan or something. He was just unaware of everything. I walked to my room, and closed the door behind us. Without hesitation, Alan scooped me up in his arms, and started sniffing my neck. Every time I moved, he growled and gripped me tighter.

"Alan, please," I said quietly. "Can't leave if you don't let me go."

He stared at me, and let me go. I shakily stepped away from him to pack my things. I stayed with my back to him, and he stayed where he was.

"Kimberly, I'm sorry." Alan spoke suddenly. "I-I didn't want to put you through this. I don't want you to be forced to do anything you don't want to."

"Why do your eyes keep going red?"

"My wolf is fighting with me. He-" Alan started playing with his hands. "He really wants to be around you. This alpha thing is totally hard, and we're both confused."

"Well..." I closed my suitcase. "That's upsetting. But we have to get my car."
