I practically run down the stairs just to get away from the tension that was left in my room. I walk into the kitchen to find my mum taking out a few groceries for dinner.

"Hey, we're having steak tonight." Mum said in such a soothing tone only a mother could do. She smile always brings out a smile in me.

"Yeah. Could you drive Jackson home please?" I said in a sweet voice, even though mum loved Jackson she never loved the thought of us dating, but when we broke up she went back to her normal loving self. She liked him a lot though, she was suspicious of anyone I had romantic intentions with. In a way she went all mum crazy.

"No." She said short and sweet. Or maybe not so sweet.

"He will stay for dinner and he may sleepover if his mum agrees with it. It's already late and I don't want to drive again. We haven't had Jackson over for dinner in a while also and don't worry we have enough to feed him too." Her smile grew bigger as she opened the fridge to find all the strawberries and cream gone. She gave me a knowing look. She is really fine with him sleeping over now that we're best friends. Well kinda now.

"Um. Ok I'll go tell him. Love you." I smiled then walked to the stairs. Only to be greeted by Jackson. The tension in the air was unbearable.

"My mum said you are staying for dinner and sleeping over. So you kinda don't have a choice." I said trying to lighten the thick air.

"I'll tell my mum, she's used to it." He grabbed his phone texted really fast then slowly walked into the kitchen next to me.

The tension growing with each step until we reached my mum.

Half an hour later filled with small talk.

Like school, friends, girlfriend? Boyfriends?! And if he is doing drugs.

Ok. So maybe not so small talk.

My foster mum has had me since birth. She never kept my being adopted a secret. She'd been telling me since I was 2, I only started to understand when I was 5 and all of my friends looked like their mums, but I didn't look anything like mine.

She's beautiful. Her hair is black but it's always been dyed red over the black she's tanned and she has blue grey eyes. I know right completely different from a small 5 year old girl with black hair and brown eyes who isn't as tanned as her, granted I believe its fake but I'm more a tanned palely colour.

Yes, she is still single but wanted a child so she got one at the age of 20 so now she's 36. Her job is professional photographer. She was married once to a lawyer. I considered him my foster dad for 7 years until I was 12 and I saw him cheating while I was out with my friends. I ran home and told my mum. She started cry then told me to go to my room. I woke up and he was gone all his things and mum was cooking breakfast fake smiling.

She's ok now, she has started online dating and she is back to her old self again.

"So Miss Summers any luck with the online dating yet?" Jackson said bringing me out of my thoughts.

"I wish, but no and please Jackson call me Anna." Mum said getting up and putting the dishes into the dishwasher.

"Well I wish you well. I hope you find someone amazing, Anna." They both smiled.

"Ok well run along I'm going to bed now. Don't make too much noise. Silvia I'm looking at you no loud music." I smiled innocently, "I won't be here when you wake up I've got to be at a christening early in the morning. Night" She took off not letting me answer.

We walked up to my room. I awkwardly turned off the lights and got into bed. I felt the bed shift when Jackson lied down beside me. It was never this weird before.
