After a meal of a bowl of cereal, you sat staring at Jeff as he continued to move the pile of newspapers on the table.
The pile had gone down by almost half its original height, but the large pile in the corner of the room still looked the same, and you knew that it would take all day to completely sort through the newspapers and dispose of them.
There was nothing to do. You had read the few old books that were scattered and torn throughout the house, and nothing on the TV interested you. You wondered if he had a laptop hidden anywhere, as you hadn't seen a computer anywhere, but you didn't want to bug him and make him find it. Instead you wanted to leave Jeff to sort through the newspapers, and quickly.
You stood, making him look up and stop what he was doing. You made eye contact with each other and neither wanted to break it. Jeff put the newspapers in his hand down and stood, walking towards you before reaching out and grabbing your arms that were at your sides. He leaned in and gently kissed you, his lips lightly touching yours for a few seconds, before pulling away. He kept his face close to yours and smiled, but it was lopsided and small, being restricted by the plasters which he used to cover the cuts on his cheeks. His eyes changed from blue to grey for a few seconds, and in that quick glimpse you were able to see something.
Longing.
Wanting.
He turned and walked away, and continued to sort through the newspapers on the table. You stood dazed for a few minutes before walking to the counter and taking some money.
'I'm going out to buy some books' you said once you reached the kitchen door.
Jeff didn't reply, but you knew that he heard, so left the house.
