Detention.
I had never received anything close to it in my life, and just standing in front of the door was making my heart pound wildly in my chest. I'd been an exemplary student for three years and my senior year I arrive late to class for the first time to the only class where the teacher totally had it out for me.
"Are you alright?" I jumped at the question as I came crashing back to reality.
"Of course!" I squeaked out. The stranger chuckled, making a show of a pair of dimples as he smiled.
"First time in detention?" He assumed. I nodded, feeling sick to my stomach over the whole situation.
"You?" I asked feebly as more students lined up at the door while we waited for the teacher to show up.
"Not even close." He answered with another laugh, his golden curls bouncing as his head shook. "I'm Ashton."
"Oh." I stated in realization. I knew that name. "We have art class together. I'm Gwen."
"I got detention from Mr. Barnes too." He confirmed. "The guy's kind of a huge prick."
"Tell me about it." I grumbled in agreement.
"You shouldn't even be here. At least I earned my detention." Ashton pointed out and I laughed.
"Who even drew that portrait you turned in?" I questioned. "There aren't any students in our class who could draw Mr. Barnes' face on the naked body of Donald Trump."
"I paid my friend Zayn to do it. He's taking art at the community college. Put a huge dent in my wallet, but that ghastly portrait was so worth it." Ashton giggled at the memory, watching as more students gathered in wait. He looked annoyed.
"Hey, what do you say we actually earn you a detention?" Ashton suggested with a smirk. I could feel my eyes widen of their own accord and fear welled in my throat. My undeserved detention alone was enough to make me sick.
"Ummm...." I drew out the word in uncertainty.
"C'mon, Gwen! It'll be fun. Besides, you could use a bit of rebellion. You're trembling like a leaf in the wind." Ashton pointed out, and I tried to still myself when I saw he was right.
"This is embarrassing. I'm just not used to being in trouble." I explained, smoothing my dress out nervously before shaking my head. "You're right. This is ridiculous. Take the lead."
"Right this way, m'lady." Ashton held it his arm for me with a wide grin. I took his arm and inhaled deeply as he swept me away from the detention room just as the teacher rounded the hallway corner.
"RUN!" Ashton whisper shouted into my ear, sending chills down my spine and urging my feet to pick up their pace as I stumbled, trying to keep up with him. Ashton threw his head back and whooped as we ran and I could feel my body finally start to relax as elated laughter spilled from my lips. He bulldozed through throngs of students and crashed his side into doors to open them on our way out and I'd never felt so free.
"Oh my god, this is insane! You're insane! We're insane!" I shouted as we made it out the gate and officially off school property. We ran a couple minutes longer before Ashton came to a sudden stop and caught me in his arms when I crashed into him. We erupted into what could only look like manic laughter, pressing against one another in an attempt to keep ourselves standing.
"You need to get detention more often, miss Hailey. You're a riot." Ashton teased. I elbowed him as I finally calmed my laughter.
"Wow. Forget earning a detention. I'm going to be killed when my parents find out I've ditched detention." I sighed and Ashton clasped my shoulders and turned me to look him in his emerald green eyes.
"We're not thinking about what's happening after ditching, Gwen Hailey. We're still in the 'ditching detention' phase until we need to go home. What do you want to do first?" Ashton smiled and I let myself melt at his genuine determination to get me to enjoy myself.
"Well, you're the expert." I spoke up. "Um, I'm assuming. You have done this before, haven't you?"
"More times than I can count." He assured me with a nod. "But I usually just go to the record shop on Main Street. I've been trying to get hired there forever."
"Poe's Records?" I asked.
"Yeah, you know the place?"
"My dad's brother is Poe. He owns that shop." I explained. Ashton's jaw dropped.
"Whaaaaaaaat??" Ashton whisper shouted in surprise. I laughed.
"Unfortunately, we obviously can't go there because if my dad finds out I was there instead of in detention my uncle is going to have his ass handed to him."
"Alright, sure." Ashton nodded in agreement as he thought. "Let's get some food in you then, huh?"
"Food sounds amazing right now." I decided out loud. "There's a lovely cafe up the road from Poe's Records if you wanna try something new."
"Why do you assume I haven't been to said cafe before?" Ashton asked with the teasing smile I was beginning to truly adore. I only laughed at his question. He would understand when we got there.
