AN: A bit of a late update, but I hope you enjoy this. Not sure how I feel about the whole of this part, so please give me some feedback.

Luke's POV:
She was swaying softly to the music, her eyes wandering and a glass of something that looked sweet was pressed to her lips. She was radiant, her dark brown hair fell loosely just at her shoulders and contrasted with the red of her dress and lips. She looked ravishing, and she was attracting nearly as much attention as my kid sister was.
I'd known her most of my life, since she'd been serving my sister since she was small, and when I was younger we were nearly close enough to be friends, but by then my father had deemed me ready to learn the royal ways. With a sigh, I pushed the thoughts back and set down my own beverage and made my way into the crowd of bodies dancing modestly. She was easy enough to find despite her smaller stature; really, all I had to do was follow the stares. I stopped a few people away and watched her.
Maisie's pretty freckled face held a distant, preoccupied expression. Her chocolate brown eyes were staring into the crowd, looking for somebody. I'd like to think she was watching for me, but I couldn't ignore the fact she could very well be watching for my sister. They were best friends, after all.
"Miss Maisie," I spoke clearly, and her trance was instantly broken. Loose strands of brunette whipped one way as she turned to me, her chocolate-colored eyes I loved so much went wide in surprise and then softened as she smiled at me.
"Hello," she greeted me, sounding shy and unsure.
"You wore the dress," I commented with a grin.
"You asked me to," she replied with a cheeky grin, drawing my attention to the splash of freckles there. "You are the only son of the king remaining in the country. It would be very illegal to refuse or ignore a demand from the crown prince."
"Yes, it would." I could feel the signature wicked Hemmings grin make it's way to my face and held out my hand. "Dance with me."
"Do you have to sound so demanding?" She asked, eyebrows furrowed and her nose twitching in annoyance. "You could just ask me."
"If I ask you to do something, you can refuse. You're not allowed the same luxury if I'm making demands and giving orders." I reasoned. Her face fell and she scoffed, but took my hand nonetheless, making a disapproving noise as I put my other on her waist.
"You must be the reason your brothers left the country to pursue other titles."
She'd made the backhanded comment so casually I nearly missed it, but I didn't miss the fire flashing behind her brown eyes. She'd meant for me to hear it. She was testing me.
"I'd suggest you watch that wicked tongue," I spoke with nonchalance as I wrapped my arm around her waist.
"I'm right, aren't I?" She laughed as I moved us about the dance floor. I pursed my lips.
"What happened to the blushing servant girl I found in my sister's room?" I quipped.
"She left with the gallant prince who helped her pick out a dress and spoke sweet words to her," she answered easily. I was a bit taken aback at how easily she kept up with my banter. The song changed to something slow and the arm I had around her waist brought her close to me.
"Rest your head against my chest, dear Maisie. We're having a good time, remember?" She exhaled deeply, obviously anxious to get away at this point.
"You mean you're having a good time," she corrected, but did as I told her to.
"You're right," I spoke up to change the subject as we swayed, her body pressed firmly against mine. "My brothers did leave because of me. They knew I wanted the throne."
"So they just left so you'd have it?" She asked in disbelief.
"I get what I want, Maisie. You'll come to understand that soon enough," I assured her.
"You sound like a spoiled little kid," she rolled her eyes.
"Do not roll your eyes at me, Maisie," I spoke firmly, spinning her quickly before bringing her back to me. "I want you to enjoy yourself. I really do."
"Well you haven't been very enjoyable, so I'm not sure what you expect me to do. I can't just not feel annoyed and deceived. I thought you might actually be decent to me," she spoke harshly.
"Of course I'm being decent to you," I spoke indignantly.
"You're not."
"How would you have me be, then?" I asked curiously. She raised her head, looking unsure, before biting her bottom lip and nodding as she seemed to decide something.
"For one, you could look me in the eye while we dance instead of forcing the side of my face into your suit," she began. Easy enough. I loosened my grip and allowed her to look up at me as I looked down to meet her eyes.
"That's much better," she sighed, smiling. I nodded.
"Is this all?" I asked her, feeling unsure of myself.
"You're tense, Luke," she whispered, and I nearly shuddered as she dropped my formal title from my name. "Relax."
"I don't need to relax, because I'm not tense," I argued, clenching my jaw. She cocked a brow and her hand instantly went to my jaw and traced it gently. I found myself relaxing and sent her a look that told her not to say a word.
"This is exactly what I mean," she told me. I sighed and led her out of the ballroom and into the empty hallway. She gave me a confused look and I tugged at my hair in frustration.
"People are always watching me, Maisie. I'm not even sure who I am without an audience and I'm trying to be decent for you tonight, but I see that I'm failing," I explained, disappointed in myself.
"Luke, you're trying," she started, gently pushing my chin until I was facing her again. "That's a good start, okay? I'm trying, too. I've never been to a ball with a prince before, you know."
I smirked at her joking face and chuckled. She laughed a bit as well and before I knew it I had her against the wall, my lips on hers. She gasped before responding to the kiss eagerly, hands tangling in my hair. I pulled away quickly, unable to suppress a grin.
"Was that decent?" I asked her, twirling a piece of her hair with my finger as I stared into her darkened brown eyes.
"Screw decent, you're too far away," she mumbled, pulling me flush against her and wrapping her arms around my neck. If anybody caught us, there would be serious trouble. Especially for Maisie, but at the moment neither of us could be bothered to think that far ahead. Skin brushed against skin and lips smacked as we electrified the air with sexual tension. Tomorrow we'd have to pretend this hadn't happened and go back to being Prince Luke and Amity's servant girl Maisie, but for the moment she was my entire world and I wished it would never end.
