"Gah!" Michael exclaimed, letting out a guttural and less than human noise of frustration before slamming his text book closed and pulling at his dark hair.
"You're aware that we're still in the library, right?" I sighed, turning my focus away from my friends.
"Fucking maths." Michael mumbled, shoving his text book to the side and resting his head in his arms on the table. I rolled my eyes.
Calum was sat beside me, headphones in his ears with his nose stuck in his biology text book, hood pulled up to shield him from any distractions his friends might cause. Ashton was beside Michael with his text book open on the table in front of him, but instead of studying he was drumming it with his fingers and a pencil. Michael was... well, sleeping in lieu of studying. He'd made a valiant effort, I acknowledged, lasting more than ten minutes this morning.
"Why the hell do we have to wake up at five in the morning to study instead of doing it after classes? You know, closer to noon than to midnight." Ashton asked, pausing his drumming to shoot me an annoyed look.
"You don't have to be here." I reminded him. Ashton shrugged and started drumming again, picking up where he left off.
"We meet here every morning at 5am to study, even on the weekend, and every single day you open your text book and don't so much as turn the page in the two hours we're here before going back to bed." Calum spoke up, pulling one ear bud out and turning to his best friend. "Are you going to make me ask?"
That was when it happened. The whole reason my friends and I were in the library at five o'clock in the morning instead of asleep in bed. A small platinum blonde walked through the library door and sat herself down at the table in front of ours, right within my range of sight.
"Mate, why are we here?" Calum asked tiredly.
She wore a cute pink skirt and black flats to match her nearly backless top. Her eyes were almond shaped and a dark brown, but they were warm and kind. She pulled out three books and set them on the table, then got up and disappeared behind the bookshelves to retrieve the same text book she did every morning. I waited a few seconds before standing up.
"I'll be right back." I told the guys.
"I shouldn't have bothered asking." Calum groaned, putting his ear bud back in it's place.
I pulled a little blue post-it note off the stack she kept next to her text books and picked up one of the pens on the table. I thought for a moment, then allowed myself a small smile as I wrote her a note.
'I keep myself busy with things to do, but every time I pause,
I think of you.'
xxI dropped the pen back on the table and stuck the note on the cover of one of her text books so she would see it when she got back. I sighed and walked back to the table silently and was relieved when nobody tried talking to me or asked any questions. I watched and waited patiently for her to return. A couple minutes later she came back into sight with her usual text book in hand and sat down, setting it on the table.
She went to open one of the text books, but paused and stared down momentarily. She picked up the sticky note and read it. Then, her thin pink lips spread into a smile and a pretty blush tinted her cheeks. She looked around, still smiling, in hopes of finding a hint as to who had left the little note, but as soon as her gaze started to turn in my direction, I looked down at my text book for the first time. My lips were spread in a wide grin and I played with my lip ring.
I'd do anything to see that smile on her face.
"Isabelle Watson? That's why I get up before the sun every morning?! So you can creep on Belle?!" Calum exclaimed quietly. My eyes went wide and I punched Calum's shoulder to shut him up.
"Really, mate? Could you say that again any louder?" I spoke in a hushed tone.
"Yes, actually. He could have! What the hell are you thinking, dragging us out of bed so you can look at a pretty girl?" Ashton groaned.
"Have I not mentioned enough times that you guys don't actually have to be here?" I rolled my eyes and rested my forehead against the cool wooden table.
"Are you done for the morning?" Calum asked with a sigh. I picked up my head and looked over at Belle, who had started studying, that small smile still on her face.
"Yeah, let's go." I confirmed.
"For the record, I don't mind waking up to help cover for you." Michael spoke up as they all gathered their things. "But if you guys aren't actually studying, I'm not going to keep trying to study. Too early to retain information, anyways."
"Shut up, Michael." I chuckled, shaking my head at one of my best mates. They all headed for the library exit as I trudged behind the others.
"Bye, Luke." I stiffened and turned to my right to find Belle smiling right at me.
"I-I um... B-bye, Isabelle." I sputtered before I started walking again.
"Call me Belle." She called out quietly, just loud enough for me to hear, and I gulped and nodded. She waved goodbye to me and I barely managed to return the gesture before hurrying after my friends.
