"How did I just know you'd be in your office?" Calum turned his attention to the doorway where his best friend stood, leaning against the frame with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Well, Luke, this is my office." Calum reasoned. "My being here isn't unusual, so finding me doesn't exactly make you top detective, either."
"Finding you here on a day that you're supposed to be off shouldn't be so 'usual' for you." Luke countered.
"I have a lot to do, and since I am in charge I can come in and work whenever I want." Calum sighed in response. "We've been over all of this before so the concern I'm detecting from you is misplaced."
"You're working more often than you're sleeping. That's a legitimate reason for concern." Luke commented, pushing himself off of the door frame. He crossed the room and stopped on the other side of Calum's desk.
"I need an assistant." Calum admit, rubbing his eyes tiredly.
"We're in agreement, then," Luke announced with a clap of his hands, "I say we start sifting through potential candidates right away."
"There's nothing I hate more than hiring new employees only to fire them after two days. There are too many people lacking in competence that think they deserve to start working at the top of the foodchain." Calum commented bitterly.
"You're beginning to sound like your father." Luke warned. Calum shuddered at the idea.
"Disgusting." He stated, contorting his face in disdain.
"Subject change: I have the perfect applicant for your assistant position." Luke informed him with a wide grin.
"I'm not giving your cousin a job at my company." Calum began to refuse the favor Luke had asked so many times in the past.
"It's not my cousin!" Luke laughed, shaking his head. "I'm talking about a much prettier contender than Loraine."
"Luke..." Calum groaned, rolling his eyes.
"Hear me out!" Luke exclaimed, leaning forward on Calum's desk with a grin. "Her name is Devashree Avalon, but if you value your life, career, and dignity then you will refer to her as Darcy."
"Okay, thin ice. Does she have any past experience in business? A degree of some sort?" Calum asked.
"Experience and degrees are irrelevant in the case of Darcy Avalon, believe you me." Luke assured his best friend.
"All you've managed to do so far is convince me that whoever it is you want me to hire is going to cause me trouble." Calum informed the blond man leaning on his desk.
"She will also be the best damn assistant you could ever hope to have." Luke asserted.
"You're saying she is going to cause me trouble, though?" Luke asked.
"Best damn assistant is what you're supposed to be taking away from what I'm saying." Luke groaned, rolling his eyes and propelling himself off of the desk to pace around the room.
"One more chance to convince me I should hire this Devashree lady and you only get it because you mediated the situation at our junior prom between Maxine and I." Luke informed him.
"Really?" Calum whined, looking pained. "You sure I can't use that one for a rainy day?"
"You play the junior prom card so I'll listen to you attempting to get Darcy this job or this conversation ends now." Calum asserted. Luke pursed his lips, then nodded.
"Fine, we'll play the junior prom card." Luke nodded reluctantly.
"Glad we've agreed. Now, convince me." Calum smirked, leaning back in his chair, waiting.
"She's smart, she's organized, she's got talent, and she can learn anything that can be taught. The lady speaks Greek, Spanish, and some Chinese dialect I've never even heard of. How many other possible employees can boast those qualities?" Luke spoke seriously. Calum didn't speak for a moment, simply staring down his friend as he mulled over the information presented to him.
"You're not kidding about this girl?" Calum checked.
"Dead serious, Cal. She'll do you and the company proud. Scout's honor." Luke promised, holding up his right hand.
"You and I both know you were never a scout, so put your hand down; you look ridiculous." Calum dismissed, but furrowed his brows and sighed.
"I will give her a two week trial period." Calum relented.
"You'll be crazy not to hire her." Luke stated confidently. "You'll give her the job after a week, of that I am sure."
"Yes, yes, alright you cocky bastard." Calum chuckled.
"Drinks now?" Luke suggested.
"I'm working. Get out of my office." Calum refused, turning to his computer. Luke made a noise of disappointment, but began his walk to the door.
"Is there any way we can bypass that two week trial period?" Luke wondered hopefully.
"You're really going to press this matter?" Calum spoke in disbelief and was met with silent confirmation. "She can come here tomorrow at two for an interview." Calum sighed, typing away without ever letting his eyes stray from his monitor.
"Interview?" Luke repeated in disbelief. "After the resume I just gave you? Is that really necessary?"
"I can't treat Darcy any different than my other employees just because she's your friend. If she does well in her interview, the job is hers." Calum affirmed. Luke nodded.
"I understand. It's reasonable and it's ethical." Luke agreed. "She's going to get the job, though."
Luke pulled the door open as if to leave, but instead revealed a beautiful, raven-haired Greek goddess dressed smartly in a deep purple blouse and black pencil skirt. He grinned at the woman and whispered something Calum couldn't hear before turning toward the office and ushering her in.
"Devashree Avalon, I presume." Calum spoke slowly, shooting a glare at Luke as he sauntered out of the room with a shit eating grin.
"Darcy, actually." She corrected with a painted smile as she pulled the door closed and strutted into Calum's office. "Thank you for agreeing to this interview, Mr. Hood."
Calum then licked his lips and spoke again.
"Darcy Avalon, then."
