"In the end that was the choice you made, and it doesn't matter how hard it was to make it. It matters that you did."

BETWEEN SEASON 2-3

"What about Monty?" Raven's voice wasn't calming to Jasper, in fact it raised all the troubles he had and made his breath catch in his throat.

"He'll survive, we both will." Jasper replied coldly, he had turned his back so the mechanic couldn't see the lump forming in his throat.

"Jasper, come on don't be such an ass." Raven stopped with whatever she was tinkering with and moved to stand behind the teen.

"I don't want to talk about." He said with a false sense of determination, but he didn't move from his spot in the middle of the engineering room.

"Talk about it." Raven put a hand on his shoulder, Jasper felt his knees quivering.

"I can't Raven." He put his hand on hers to move it away, the mechanic tightened her grip. Her nails began to dig into his shirt fabric, Jasper rolled his shoulder back.

"You can, what is up with you and Monty?"

"Raven, please we'll both live." Jasper could feel his patience hanging on the edge, the itch of his feet to run, his conscious hanging on his every word. He wasn't going to live, he wasn't going to survive this. He needed Monty, but Monty didn't need him.

"That's bullcrap and you know it. Jasper? You can trust me, what's happening?" The girl felt the distant hum of machinery in her eardrum, she could feel the tension of Jasper in the air and something made her feel sick.

"Raven! Don't you get it!" Jasper suddenly shouted with a hoarseness in his throat and turned to Raven, "Don't you understand!" He screamed in her face and Raven didn't dare move, she saw the veins on his face, she saw the tears ready to fall and she for the first time saw Jasper afraid. His face softened and his eyes dropped as suddenly as the mood had come around, "I think I love him Raven."

"Tell him." Raven said simply, her voice warm and welcoming, even she was surprised at the tone.

"No." Jasper rubbed the back of his head whilst shaking it.

"Why not?" She questioned him, guiding him to sit on a chair by the table, her hands again on his shoulders but just lingering there.

"Don't ask me that."

"Why?" Raven took a step back and crossed her arms.

"Raven." He grimaced between his teeth, he got up to leave but the girl pushed him down when he was within arms reach.

"Why are you afraid to tell Monty you love him?" Raven leaned against the table, the sound of metal creaking sent shivers down their spines as the up and down movement of Jaspers shaking leg cracked the floor.

"Wouldn't you be afraid to tell your best friend that you would die for him?" Jasper surprised himself, he didn't think it would sound that cliché, that rehearsed. He would never emit to practising his confession a hundred times in front of the mirror.

"Would you?" Raven stood more still than she ever did in her life.

"Die for Monty?" Jasper replied, he stopped his leg and looked at the girl, his throat closed and his fingers clenched each other.

Raven nodded.

Jasper was silent, he remembered all the times he thought he was going to die. He brought his mind back and they all the events had one thing in common.

He always thought of Monty Green.

Jasper thought of the times in the Ark, all his childhood memories connected by his ever present best friend. Jasper always apologised, every time he had muttered a confession about the guilt he had leaving Monty behind.

Jasper looked up at Raven, he wiped the sweat off his forehead and clenched his hands together until they turned white. The boy looked at the girl in front of him and with a smile that held both sadness and joy he confessed,

"Yeah, I would."
