Chapter 15: Alive after all

I woke up in a small tent. It was so much like the tent I had woken up in at Paevanshire, that I almost that I was in Paevanshire, until I saw the Shae.

Of course, Lilith was there too. She was standing in a corner, all by herself, while the Shae talked amongst themselves. When Lilith saw that I was awake she stifled a scream and ran up to me.

I winced. How many times had I passed out in the past few days? Three? And Lilith was almost always there to greet me.

"Duke! Duke! You're alright! You have to stop passing out on me! I thought you were dead!"

A couple of the Shae in the room snickered. Lilith wrapped her arms around my waist.

But wait a second, wasn't I supposed to be like, dead? I had fallen off a 100 million mile long mountain, no one survived that, especially not me. "Um, sorry to interrupt, but aren't I supposed to be dead? I fell off a mountain."

The girl I had seen before I had fallen, Vega, stepped forward. "Incase you haven't noticed, Shae can fly." She flapped he eagle-like wings, for momentum. "I saved you before you fell a long distance, easily."

"What about Racayanne? Is he okay?" I thought about the arrow that had dug into his heart. When he had fallen over, a look of peacefulness on his face.

Vega scowled. "Unfortunately, he is nearly impossible to kill. Each human or creature he has killed and taken there soul is the amount of lives that he has. We have shot at him hundreds of times, and yet, he does not die. This time was no different."

"What do you want me for? Was I really worth saving?"

Vega looked at me strangely, as if I should have known the answer to that question. "Because Duke, you are special, very, very special. And if we Shae have our hands on you, you can do no harm to our species. Besides, you have seen our brethren, I have heard. We haven't talked to them in centuries. How are they?"

"Um," I said. "If you consider them trying to kill us, doing fine, then they're fine, I guess. And, I've only had contact with the Water Shae and an outcast of the Desert Shae, they weren't exactly pleasant." I bit my lip hard. Why did I say that? Certainly they were going to kill me after I just insulted their kind.

But Vega only laughed. "Of course they weren't pleasant, silly Nau. You are powerful, and some of our brethren do not think far into the future, they believe it is best to just kill you, then have you on our side."

"I'm not on anybody's side! Get over it! Is that all you want me here for? So you can convince m to join your 'side'"

Vega smiled slyly at a male Shae, then turned back toward me. "No, Duke, that is not the only reason. Lord Scy also wishes to speak with you." She looked back at the guy she had smiled at earlier. "Peak will show you the way."

At that she walked out of the room, with everyone but the Peak guy she had smiled at.

Now that Vega was gone Lilith rushed over to me. "Duke! What did Racayanne do to you? Did he make you drink one of his potions? Did he put a spell on you? Oh my Alembria! Did he take your soul?"

I smiled. It was weird, but pleasant to have Lilith worry about me like this. "No, Lilith, relax, he only told me a story."

Peak looked up form his position, sharply. "Racayanne told you one of his stories? His stories are meant to put you in a trance, keep you from doing what you want to do and instead send you to a perilous death. Why did you ever agree for him to tell you a story?"

I looked down at my feet. "I didn't know. I had a feeling it was a bad idea, but I didn't know for sure."

Peak huffed exasperatedly. "Don't you know anything Duke? Trust your gut!"

Lilith looked at him sideways. "Who are you again?"

Peak ignored her. "What story did he tell you anyway."

I ran my finger through my hair, he wasn't going to like this. "Just the day when the Shae were born or how they came to be, so to say."

Peak looked at me sharply. "What did you just say?"

I opened my mouth searching for an answer, any answer, but then came a voice from one of the tents. "Peak! Where are my visitors? I wanted them here forever ago! I don't like to be kept waiting!"

Peak started walking out the door and then looked back at Lilith and I. "That's Lord Scy, you don't want to make her angry if you wish to stay here, trust me."

He headed out the door without another word, leaving Lilith and I to follow after him.

The camp was very much like the Water Shae camp. The only difference was the fact that it was perched on a mountain, not the side of a lake.

Shae stopped what they were doing the gawk at Lilith and I. I bet that most of them had never seen a human before today, much less a Power and a Partial. If they had seen humans, it probably wasn't since the last war and I'm pretty sure they didn't have good memories of that.

Peak led us to the tent where all the commands to come here and come form. He opened the flap to let us inside and followed. When I saw what was inside, I gasped.
