Emily's body froze when Thomas's lips touched hers. Seconds later, she tried to move away but he moved his right hand to the back of her head, which he used to push her face to his, while his left hand was on the small of her back. Her eyes widened with each kiss Thomas gave her and her eyes darted away from his face to Newt's figure which was coming towards them. Emily tried to move again but his grip tightened. When Newt was a few minutes away, an idea appeared in her mind.
The girl started to kiss Thomas back. Their lips moved in a rhythm and she could feel him smirk against her lips. Soon enough, his grip loosened. Once it was loose and he was oblivious of her movement, she grabbed his wrists and yanked his hands off of her. Emily kicked him hard in the shins and he stumbled to the ground. Newt arrived at the hill as soon as Thomas fell on the sand and picked him up by the collar of his shirt. Newt's face was flushed and there was anger with hints of jealousy in his eyes.
"What the bloody hell were you just doing, Tommy?!" He shouted at Thomas before punching the guy in the jaw.
Thomas groaned and rubbed the place that Newt's fist connected with his face. "Hey man! Calm down!"
That reply brought Newt's arm back and fist clenched, ready for another blow. Thomas put his hands over his face, trying to protect it. "Hey! You've got the wrong idea?"
"Oh really?" Newt seethed at his response. "Because it looked like you were just bloody making out with Emily." The blonde boy whipped his head to face Emily's, whose eyes were brimming with tears. "And it looked like she was kissin' back."
"Newt!" Emily squeaked. "I --"
"Save it, Em." His head turned back to Thomas's, his fist ready to punch, waiting for his answer.
A mischievous look flashed in the brunette's eyes. "It's not like Emily was claimed by you, Newt. She was never yours because you never really asked her out or anything. Besides, she was the one asking for it. She was practically begging me. I told her I thought she was with you but she said that she wasn't and then she moved closer to me. I couldn't really say no, man. I mean, c'mon, she's real ho--"
Newt brought his fist down to Thomas's cheek. Emily swore that she heard a crack sound and sure enough, a small white chunk fell out of Thomas's mouth along with some blood.
Thomas sneered at Newt. "Oh wow, looks like you chipped my tooth." The blood trickled down his chin and it glistened in the moonlight.
"Shut the hell up." Newt spat. He let go of Thomas's shirt and pushed him down the hill. The brunette's silhouette staggered to a standing position and slowly walked back to camp. Newt faced Emily. "Is what that slinthead said true?"
Ugh. The voice in her head spoke again. Geez. This one's pretty stupid too.
Emily's tone turned into a sarcastic one. "Yes, Newt. I decided to kiss Thomas at the exact moment you were looking... No Newt. Why the heck would I kiss him?! Dude, I don't know if you've already noticed, but I. Like. You." Emily's eyes widened at the words that came out of her mouth. She felt regret in her stomach and her head started aching. She ignored it.
"How do I know you're telling the truth?" Newt's fists were clenched at his side. "I saw you kiss back."
Well I mean... the kiss wasn't that bad. Was it? It actually felt pretty nice. Don't you think? Besides, why didn't Newt come by your side if he cared for you so much? I think this Thomas guy is a lot --
Emily fell on her knees and covered her ears. "Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP!"
Newt's face softened as he saw Emily in pain. He knelt down beside her and put his hand on her back. "Love, w-what's wrong?"
"Newt, go! Please!" Emily yelled. The voice spoke more and her head started aching so much, it was as if someone was bashing it against a wall.
"I'm not going to --"
"WHAT THE SHUCK DID I JUST SAY?" She roared at him. "GO AWAY NOW! YOU NEVER LISTEN! GO, GO, GO!" Just like Newt's expression, she was shocked of her words. It felt like the real her was trapped in a prison in her head. All these words that left her lips weren't ones that she wanted to say. It was the Flare talking. She shook her head vigorously and her eyes were clenched shut.
Newt tripped backwards and looked at the girl in fear. "Em. I..."
Emily's new voice spoke again. "Ugh, you are such an idiot. Poor, little Newt. I don't know if you've pieced it together yet, and by the looks of it, you haven't. But something is clearly wrong with me. Maybe you did hit your head when you jumped from the wall."
Newt's eyes were broken, showing that Emily's utterance had hurt him. "What are you talking about?"
The girl fought against the Flare and she was free for a moment. "I..." Tears flowed down her cheeks and her eyes showed that she regained control over what she was fighting against. She was conflicted but the Flare started taking over again. She had to tell him or else he would hate her and she would be broken. But at the same time, she would never be treated the same. Seconds passed and she made her decision.
"Newt... I... I'm n-not immune to the Flare." Her head was pounding and her shirt was stained with tears.
"W-what?"
"I'm not immune to the F-flare. I've k-known ever since I came b-back to the place with the d-dorms."
"Why haven't you told me? Does anyone else know?"
She looked to Newt with a remorseful expression on her face. "I didn't want you to treat me different. I didn't want to hurt you." His second question was ignored.
Newt's lips were in a straight line. "I wouldn't be like that if you told me."
More tears spilled from Emily's eyes and patches of sand below her became damp. "We both know you would."
Newt's mouth pursed and he got up to his feet and started walking towards the fire that the gladers had lit. He stopped after a few steps and turned his head slightly towards his shoulder. "If you really feel that way, then I won't treat you like anything. I'll leave you alone. That's what you want, right?" And with that, he limped away.
"N-newt." Emily croaked.
But Newt ignored her and continued his walk back. The blonde boy's figure became smaller and smaller the farther he was.
Heartbroken, Emily brought her hands to her eyes as a new flood of tears appeared. Everything that she thought she would do to Newt, happened to her. And it hurt more than her headaches, more than when Chuck died.
In the back of her head, she could hear the evil her's voice chuckling, as if everything in its plan fell perfectly into place.
