"I'm sorry, but due to salary cuts, we need to let you go" My boss said. I could already feel the tears coming on but I tried to contain myself.
"P-Please don't do this. I'll work for free, sleep in the stables" I cried. He sadly shook his head and sat up.
"No Sage, I'm sorry" He said. He head me outside and closed the door on me, without saying a word. The truth was I was really his favorite, but he needed to let me go.
The streets of Brooklyn were cold and bitter, barely any light could be seen. I sighed and walked along the sidewalk, my shoes clanking along the stone sidewalk. Many people weren't out, except for drunken bums and street rats.
"Excuse me miss" a man said sitting against a building. He looked old, with a long beard and a sad face, holding out a tin cup. I smiled and put some money in his cup.
"God bless ye miss" He said nodding his head. As I walked to more I was glad I wasn't running into any bums but a problem popped into my head.
Where was I going to sleep? and live?
I forgot about the whole being fired thing that I didn't realize I was now homeless. A tear came down my cheek but I fought to be strong, thats what mum would've wanted.
As I walked, I thought about everything I was going through, and what I went through. My father dying, my mother leaving me, and my sister committing suicide. I only started working for my former boss just 2 years ago but he treated me nicely and kindly. I was good friends with his daughter and his wife treated me like one of her own. I was going to miss that.
I ended up walking all the way to Manhattan when a drunken bum came before me.
"Hello pretty lady" he slurred, pinning me to a wall. His hands laid on the side of my head and his breath reeked of beer and vodka.
"P-Please leave me a-alone" I said crying. Right now I wanted to be saved.
"Nahhh We haven't even had any fun yet" he laughed, pulling up my skirt. He pinned both my arms to the side and slowly started caressing my body. He kissed my neck harshly and was sure to leave a mark. I looked away from him, but he put his large hands around my neck and made me look at him.
"Come on, look at me baby girl" he smirked. I closed by eyes but then the pain was all away. I was now laying on a wall, closing my eyes as tears flowed. I opened them to see a boy, with light brown hair and a cigar hanging from the right side of his mouth.
"Youse alright miss?" He asked in a strong Italian accent. I nodded my head slightly, still shocked from what happened.
"I should gets youse back to the lodging house, youse look like your all alone out here" He said. I nodded my head and followed him through the streets. I still haven't said a work because I was to much in shock. Once we were in the building, the room was quiet, except for the squeaking of the floor beneath them.
"Shhh. Be very quiet. I'll let you sleep in my bunk okay?" He said quietly, leading me upstairs. I was lead into a large room, with lines of beds covering the floors. Boys slept in each one, Either shirtless or pants-less... Or both.
"Here, I'll find you an extra pillow" he said, running to the only empty bed. He grabbed a pillow and laid it next to the existing one. I laid down and he laid down beside me. It wasn't the most comfortable but he was warm.
"I um... Didn't catch your name" I said, facing him. He smiled sleepy and looked towards me.
"The names Racetrack, and you?"
"Sage"
