Camila's POV
Years ago I had a best friend, she had my back, looked out for me, made me laugh, everything a best friend should be. Her name was Lauren. I still remember how we met, I was 7 and she was 11. An age gap I know, but we didn't care...
Flashback...
"Give me that!" An older boy took my juice box in the playground. "Hey that's mine, give it back!" I stood up pissed but he was still taller than me. "And what if I don't? What are you gonna do about it? Shorty!" The boy sneered at me as a small crowned formed. "Just give it back!" I said nervously as more people crowded around us. "Or what? You gonna cry? Shorty!" He shoved me back so I landed on my ass and tears welled up in my eyes out of pain. "Leave her alone Michael!" A girl stood in front of me and the boy. "No one asked for you to come here Jauregui! We're just messing around with the kid!" The boy glared at the girl whose face I was yet to see. "Yeah we're older than you Jauregui piss off!" One of the 12 year old boys sneered at the girl. "Just give it back to her and no one gets hurt!" The girl said, not worried about the boys. "I'm not afraid to hit a girl Jauregui I said piss off!" The boy, Michael growled at the Jauregui girl. He took two steps forward then before he could even breathe the Jauregui girl punched him square in the nose. The crowd all gasped and scattered as a teacher ran over to attend to Michael and the Jauregui girl grabbed my hand and ran off behind the behind the main building. "Ssh!" She held her hand over my mouth as a teacher ran past, no doubt looking for the two of us. "Okay we're good. What's your name?" She asked as she sat down against the wall, motioning for me to do the same. "My names Camila. Thanks for doing that, you hit him hard woah!" I said in awe of the older girl. "My names Lauren, you're welcome shorty. I'll look after you, you're okay I promise!" She smiled and I smiled back. This was the start of an unlikely friendship...
End of Flashback...
Without Lauren I don't know what would happened that day. Years later Michael was arrested for severe abuse of a younger girl while he was only 16 years old. I'd say that would have been me if Lauren hadn't been there. A few years of friendship later and Lauren and I made a promise. A promise I always assume we would keep. But I was young and gullible...
Flashback...
I was 9 and Lauren was 13. We were having a sleepover in the treehouse we built in Lauren yard. "Hey Lo are you sleepy?" I asked as we both lay in our sleeping bags in the treehouse we made together. "Yes Camila I'm sleep talking!" She whispered back and rolled her eyes. "Really?" I said shocked. "No loser I'm still awake and you're still gullible!" She chuckled. "What's gullible?" I asked. "You believe what others say too easily!" She explained. "Ohh right...I do not!" I defended. "You do too! Remember when I told you that I was the president of the united states daughter in disguise and you believed me!" She sat up and laughed. "Hey shut up I was only 7!" I defended again as she just laughed harder. "You're rude just rude Jauregui!" I glared at her and flopped back down with my back facing her. "Heyy come on Camila don't give me the silent treatment!" She got out of her sleeping bag and crawled over to me. "Come on babe don't ignore me! Your like my sister you love me!" She laughed and began to tickle my sides. "Hey hey hey okay okay I'm sorry for ignoring you I'm sorry for ignoring you!!" I laughed as she tickled me harder. "I know! Now say Lauren is my best friend ever and it'll stay like that forever!" She laughed and kept tickling me. "Lauren is my best friend ever and it'll stay like that forever!" I laughed as she stopped and lay next to me laughing along with me. "Lauren?" I smiled after we'd both gotten over our laughing attacks. "Camila?" She smiled back. "Promise we'll always be friends?" I asked. "Nope." She answered and my smile faded. "I promise we'll always be BEST friends!" Lauren smiled and I sighed in relief. "Pinky promise?" I continued and Lauren chuckled. "Pinky promise!" She locked pinked with mine and we kissed each others pinkies before breaking apart and Lauren went back to her sleeping bag. "Night Camila, love you!" She yawned. "Love you too Lolo!" I said sleepily and I drifted off with the promise in mind...
End of Flashback...
Those were the good days. The days we hung out and sometimes she'd teach me things or read to me. Just spending time with my best friend was great. And for a couple more years the promise held strong. But like I said I was young and gullible. And I know now that promises are made to be broken.
Flashback...
I was 11 and Lauren was 15. I was over at her house cause lately we hadn't been able to hang out since Lauren was in high school now and we pretty much never saw each other. "So what's high school like?" I asked curiously as I lay on Lauren's bed tossing a softball up and down in my hands and Lauren sat at her desk doing homework. "It's fine." She answered blankly. "That's specific!" I chuckled. "It's stressful Camila! I have mountains of homework and assignments and dozens of tests and I hardly have time to hang out with my friends!" She snapped. "Yeah I know we hardly see each other anymore and-" I started. "Not you Camila, my real friends!" She cut me off. Ouch that hurt. A few minutes later she realised what she said upset me as I stayed quiet after that and she turned to talk to me. "Look Camila I didn't mean it like that...I love you I really do! But I'm older now, I'm a changed woman! I'm in high school and I have high school friends and I can't been seen hanging around with little kid!" She finished and turned back to her homework. Ouch there we go again. "So we're not best friends no more?" I asked quietly and Lauren let out a huge sigh. "Camila maybe we should just not see each other as much anymore...I have older friends who do stuff kids can't do. I'm 15 and you're 11. I'm a teenager and you're still a kid. One day you'll grow up and understand!" She said not even turning to look at me. "You never answered. Are we still best friend?" I asked again but Lauren remained silent. "Laur? Lo? Lern? Hello? Still here!" I continued. "Well maybe you shouldn't be!" She said quietly with her back still to me. "But...our promise...? I said sadly. "Just beat it Camila! I'm busy!" She snapped and I dropped the ball and left.
End of Flashback...
That was the first time Lauren blew me off. And the last time we hung out. I didn't think things would change. But I was wrong. All our friendship was and all it ever would be was A Broken Promise.
