The doctor held Adrien's hard glare for a moment before instructing the nurses to rehabilitate Alyssa.

"Now we'll see her decision." He murmured, Adrien watched them place the defibrillator on his sister's chest.

One pulse: nothing. Adrien's heart rate skyrocketed. Was he too late in his decision? The nurses tried again, but still there was no response. Adrien turned to the doctor,

"Do something!! Save my sister!!!" He screamed, pulling on the tubes that were connected to his body.

"Mr. Agreste, you must calm yourself. There's only so much we can do for her at this point." The consistent beep sounded from the room that held Alyssa. A nurse had come out.

"Time of death, 0539" she reported. Adrien turned to stare woefully at her. She swallowed hard and nodded to the two and left them. Adrien looked back into the room, he couldn't believe it. He wouldn't believe it! The nurses took his hospital bed back to his room.

Marinette stood up as she heard Adrien approaching. She started to cry as she heard his screaming down the hall. As he entered she held her head in her hands. The nurses let the two be alone for a little bit. Adrien was convulsing in grief. His hospital gown was soaking up all his tears.

Marinette came to his bedside and leaned down to hug him. Adrien didn't even notice Marinette. He felt as though his heart was tearing into pieces. Marinette held Adrien until he quieted down. Adrien buried his face in the pillow under his head. Tears still continued to flood his eyes. He felt a warm blanket fall softly over him which lulled him to sleep.

Marinette stood watching him as he fell asleep. She looked out the window to the dark sky.

"Why?" Her voice cracked as she broke into tears again. "Why her? Why now?" She whispered as hot, salty tears streamed down her face. She stood and wept, silently. She only knew Alyssa for a little while but she was like family to her. She saved her life, gave up her life for someone whom she barely knew. She was selfless and courageous.

She didn't deserve to die like this. She deserved a long life with her brother. Marinette sat down in a chair by Adrien and fell asleep.

Marinette woke up to hear soft voices conversing. She saw Adrien talking with the doctor, the doctor handed him something and left the room. Adrien sighed heavily and noticed that Marinette was awake.

"Morning" he said dully. Marinette yawned and rubbed her eyes.

"What was that all about?" She asked, Adrien stared at his hands,

"Alyssa's foster parents in England are taking her body and burying her in England. Evidently they blame us for her death, the doctor gave me her miraculous before she was shipped off." Adrien said showing the bracelet.  "On the brighter side I'm allowed to leave in a week." He said trying to cheer himself up more than Marinette.

"Speaking of miraculous's, here's your back." Marinette gave him his ring. As she did she leaned in and kissed his cheek,
"You should rest and get your strength back. I'll bring you some pastries when I visit later tonight." She said waving goodbye and leaving the dreaded hospital.

Marinette returned home to be greeted by her parents. They held solemn looks as they embraced their daughter. Marinette hugged them tightly, fighting the urge to break down right there. She sorrowfully went up to her room and flopped onto her bed. Her face contorted in a wail that was muffled by her quilt. She felt the delicate touch of Tikki.

"Why couldn't I have done anything Tikki? Why am I so useless?" Marinette asked wiping away her tears.

"Oh Marinette, you're not the one who decides these things. It's just the way of life,-"

"No! If it weren't for Gabriel none of this would've happened! He's so greedy and cruel!" Marinette retorted crossly. Tikki sat calmly on the bed, she knew this was hard on Marinette, she not only lost a dear friend, but now she had to watch her beloved go through this grief.

Marinette walked over to her desk, all her school work that Alya had brought over was piled on it.

"I guess we just go back to normal life, or whatever passes as normal." Marinette said quietly, with no more akuma's to catch, Paris didn't need Ladybug and Chat Noir anymore.
